After game two between Seattle University softball (11-20) and Weber State (16-21) was postponed on Friday April 6, the teams finished the game before playing the already-scheduled doubleheader. The Redhawks won the rescheduled game two from the previous day, before falling in the second and third contests of the day.
"Our pitchers couldn't keep the ball in the park and our walks caught up to us," said head coach Dan Powers. "We have some growing ahead of us."
Before the game was postponed, Seattle U led 11-0 after the first inning of play. The Redhawks continued their offensive dominance, adding two runs each in the second and third inning and four more in the top of the fourth. SU came away with a 19-0 win in five innings.
Of note, Jessica Ulrich (Lewiston, Idaho) hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth to bring home Rogin Hardy (Kirkland, Wash.), Kaydi Kochi (Honolulu, Hawaii), and Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) for the final four runs of the game. This was Ulrich's second home run of the season, and she is now tied for second in home runs for the Redhawks this season. She also led the team with four runs and five RBIs, batting 3-for-4 in the contest.
Ulrich got the start and win in the circle for Seattle U, allowing only three hits in five innings pitched while walking two and striking out four.
The Wildcats used five different pitchers, with Morgan Allaband handed the loss in the start.
In the second game of the day, Seattle U took the 5-0 lead going into the fourth inning, scoring three runs in the first and two more in the third.
Weber State then scored eight runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth and, despite the Redhawks adding a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats came away with the 10-6 win.
Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) started for Seattle U and gave up seven runs on nine hits, while walking and striking out six in seven innings pitched. Ulrich gave up three runs on three hits, facing only three batters, and was handed the loss.
Sarah Clark notched the win for the Wildcats, allowing six runs on seven hits, while walking five and striking out eleven in seven innings pitched.
In the third and final contest of the day, Weber State took the early lead, scoring one run in the first and three more in the second.
Seattle U added a run in the bottom of the first as Sarah Petosa (Auburn, Wash.) scored on a Brianna Guerrero (Buena Park, Calif.) single to right field.
After a quiet third and fourth inning, the Wildcats added a single run in the top of the fifth and three more in the top of the sixth to take the 8-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Guerrero added a run of her own for the Redhawks, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit and Seattle U fell, 8-2, in the third contest of the day.
Allaband notched the win for the Wildcats, giving up one run on five hits, while walking one and striking out five in five innings pitched.
Seattle U returns home on Saturday, Apr. 14 and Sunday, Apr. 15, for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. each day. The team will play the final four home contests at the Federal Way National Little League Fields in Federal Way, Wash.
