The Seattle University women's tennis team fell in the Great West Conference Championship match Sunday, taking second place in the conference after losing 4-1 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology at the HEB Tennis Center in Harlingen, Texas.

The Redhawks' lone point came from Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) at number two singles. She beat NJIT's Nina Mayevska in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to put SU on the board at 3-1. The win was Newman's 10th consecutive individual victory, and her 21st of the dual season.

NJIT clinched the match at number one doubles, where Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) squared off against Ksenia Kuzmenko of the Highlanders. Schwab fell 6-3 in the first set, then hung tough in the second, forcing an extra game before falling 6-3, 7-5.

The Highlanders took the other two singles matches that were finished, with Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) falling to Carolina Zanotta at number five singles 6-0, 6-0 and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) losing her number four singles contest to Jana Luste 6-1, 6-0.

Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) saw both their singles matches ended after NJIT won the clinching point. Both Redhawks players were down one set when play was stopped.

The Highlanders took the doubles point to begin the match. The NJIT duo of Meyevska and Luste dispatched Seattle U's team of Schwab and Wurden 8-0 at number one singles, and Monika Graff and Carolina Zanotta beat the Redhawks' team of Newman and Nicole Nakaoka (Honolulu, Hawaii) 8-3 at number three doubles.

The number two doubles match that pitted Weissmann and Lucas against NJIT's Kuzmenko and Hannelore MacDonald. The NJIT pair held a 6-3 lead when that match was stopped.

Seattle U ends their season with a 13-14 dual record and in second place of the Great West Conference. The Redhawks, along with 16 other SU sports, will join the Western Athletic Conference July 1st, 2012, and will compete in the WAC during the 2012-13 season.
