The Seattle University women's golf team placed two golfers in the top five and sits alone in second place after Monday's opening round of the West Coast Conference Championships at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

Lori Pearson (Seattle, Wash.) and Caitlin McCleary (The Dalles, Ore.) both carded a three-over-par 75 to begin the tournament and are tied for second place. Pearson took 38 strokes (+2) over her first nine holes and 37 (+1) over the final nine, including a birdie on her 17th hole to end the day at 75. McCleary on the other hand made the turn at one-under 35 before taking 40 strokes on her final nine to end the day at three over par.

Shannon Quinn (Shoreline, Wash.) carded 78 (+6) on the day to end in a tie for 12th. Quinn, who started on the tenth hole, had an exciting back nine as she tallied three birdies, three bogeys, and two double bogies all in her first nine holes of the day. She calmed down after making the turn though and shot 38 (+2) over her last nine holes to finish with a 78 (+6).

Nicole Gaddie (Salt Lake City, Utah) carded an eight-over-par 80 to place in a tie for 18th, while Christine Cook (Yakima, Wash.) turned in a score of 88 (+16) on the first day of competition.

Overall, the Redhawks have a combined score of 308 (+20) and are in second place, four strokes behind San Francisco. Individually, Maggie Yuan of BYU has the individual lead after shooting 74 (+2) Monday, just one stroke lower than Pearson and McCleary.

Seattle U looks to carry momentum from the first round into Tuesday's second round. Tee times begin at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, again at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.
