Sophomore Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) has been named Great West Player of the Week after winning the clinching point during Seattle U's 5-2 victory over Portland State April 7.
Wurden faced Portland State's Marina Todd at number five singles, winning in straight sets. Todd raced out to a 0-3 lead in the first set, but Wurden came roaring back, taking six of the next seven games to win the first set 6-4. In the second set, Wurden continued her excellent play and took the set 6-1. In all, Wurden won 12 of the last 14 games played in the 6-4, 6-1 win, her 11th individual victory of the spring.
Wurden also won in doubles play, teaming up with Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) to dispatch the Vikings' duo of Alexa McDonald and Ashley Spencer.
The victory at number five singles gave the Redhawks their fourth point of the match, clinching the dual win for SU. The Redhawks stormed out to a 3-0 dual lead with the doubles point and points from the first two singles matches, but the Vikings earned wins in the next two singles contests to pull within one. Also, the Redhawks took the sixth singles match to take the dual match 5-2.
Wurden and the rest of the Seattle University women's tennis team take on Northern Arizona Sunday, April 15 in their regular season finale. The match starts at 9:15 a.m. at the Sammamish Club in Issaquah, Wash.
