The Seattle University women's tennis team started their spring break with a win, beating Southern Utah 5-2 at Bally's Resort in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Redhawks set the tone of the match early, sweeping the two doubles matches played. At number one singles, Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash) and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) dispatched Southern Utah's duo of Alex Ivanova and Olia Tatarchenko, while Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Lindsey Newman swept their match at the second doubles position, winning 8-0 over the Thunderbirds' Ksusha Johnson and Lisa Pleskan.
Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Nicole Nakaoka (Honolulu, Hawaii) were slated to play in the third singles position and were awarded the win by forfeit as Southern Utah had just five players available for the match.
Weissmann saw action during the singles contest, however, facing SUU's Afton Staheli at number four singles. Weissmann took advantage of the extra rest and easily took the match 6-1, 6-1.
At number five singles, Wurden took down Southern Utah's Pleskan in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, while Newman needed a tiebreak to beat the Thunderbirds' Ivanova 6-7(7-5), 6-2, 10-6.
The Redhawks continue their Vegas road trip Wednesday with a 1:00 p.m. contest with Drake University, again at the tennis courts at Bally's Resort.
