The Seattle University women's tennis team ran into a tough Air Force team Friday and lost 6-1 in their first home match of the spring at Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash.
The lone SU point came in number three singles, where Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) won her 11th match of the spring with a convincing victory over the Falcons' Tiffany Tran. Newman dominated most of the match, taking the first set 6-3, and the second 6-2.
The closest match of the day came at number two singles, where SU's Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) and Air Force's Christine Molina battled for over two hours. Schwab took the first set 4-6, but fell in the second 6-2. Molina built a 5-0 lead in the third and deciding set, but Schwab staved off elimination multiple times, winning the next four games to pull within one at 5-4. Schwab couldn't keep the comeback alive, however, and lost the next game and the match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Redhawks battled in the doubles matches, but lost all three of them. In the first doubles contest, Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Newman battled back from a 5-0 deficit to take the lead at 5-6. They couldn't take another game, however, and lost 8-6 to the Air Force duo of Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke. Schwab and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) also lost by a score of 8-6 in the second doubles match, falling to Air Force's team of Hannah Dake and Natasha Rizvi.
The Redhawks have one day off before playing their second home match of the weekend against Eastern Washington. The two teams will square off at the Sammamish Club in Issaquah, Wash., with warm-ups beginning at 9:15 a.m.
