Sophomore forward Kacie Sowell (Ventura, Calif.) has been named Independent Women’s Basketball Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for her performance at No. 2 Stanford on Feb. 29 and her double-double performance in Seattle U’s Senior Day victory, 86-65, over Cal State Bakersfield on Mar. 3.

“Kacie has shown her ability to dominate the boards as our season has progressed,” said head coach Joan Bonvicini.  “She is a key to our team’s success and is playing her best basketball down the stretch.”

At No. 2 Stanford, Sowell scored six points and brought down five rebounds, as well as two assists and two steals.

Sowell led the team with 23 points and 15 rebounds versus CSU Bakersfield, adding two blocks.  She also shot 10-for-11 from the field.  This was her 14th double-double of the season.

Sowell has started all 27 games for the Redhawks thus far in 2011-12, is tied for the team lead in scoring (13.9 ppg), and leads the team in rebounding (9.6 rpg) and blocks (16).  She also has recorded 14 double-doubles so far this season.

This is Sowell’s sixth such honor this year, and second consecutive, also receiving the honor on Nov. 28, Dec. 5, Jan. 3, Feb. 6, and Feb. 27.  As a team, this is the tenth time the Seattle U women’s basketball team has received the honor this season, as Talisa Rhea (Juneau, Alaska) received the recognition on Dec. 12, Dec. 19, and Feb. 20, and Sylvia Shephard (Alta Loma, Calif.) was honored Feb. 13.

Seattle University (18-10) faces CSU Bakersfield again, this time on the road, for their regular season finale on Saturday, Mar. 10 at 7 p.m.  The Redhawks will then announce their postseason destiny at their team banquet on Monday, Mar. 12 at the Space Needle.
