Sophomore forward Kacie Sowell (Ventura, Calif.) has been named Independent Women's Basketball Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for her performance in Seattle U's 81-45 win on the road at Chicago State on Feb. 22 and 64-42 home victory versus UC Riverside on Feb. 26.

"Kacie has continued to improve every single game," said head coach Joan Bonvicini.  "She is one of our most consistent players and has the ability to dominate the boards."

At Chicago State, Sowell led the team with 17 points and 16 rebounds, nearing a career high in both figures.  She shot 5-for-6 from the field, as well as 7-for-9 from the free-throw line.

Sowell scored 10 points and brought down 14 rebounds versus UC Riverside, also adding a block and a steal.  This game marked her 13th double-double of the season.

Sowell has started all 26 games for the Redhawks thus far in 2011-12, is second on the team in scoring (13.8 ppg), and leads the team in rebounding (9.6 rpg) and blocks (14).  She also has 13 double-doubles so far this season.

This is Sowell's fifth such honor this year, also receiving the honor on Nov. 28, Dec. 5, Jan. 3, and Feb. 6.  As a team, this is the ninth time the women's basketball team has received the honor this season, as Talisa Rhea (Juneau, Alaska) received the recognition on Dec. 12, Dec. 19, and Feb. 20, and Sylvia Shephard (Alta Loma, Calif.) was honored Feb. 13.

Seattle University (17-9) faces No. 2 Stanford on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. before returning home for Senior Day on Saturday, Mar. 3 versus CSU Bakersfield at 4 p.m.
