Sowell shot 5-for-6 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line as she finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Talisa Rhea (Juneau, Alaska) added 12 points and five rebounds, shooting 5-for-12 from the field. Brenda Adhiambo (Mombasa, Kenya) scored 11 for the Redhawks, shooting 5-for-6 from the field. Ashley Ward (Irvine, Calif.) and Daidra Brown (Seattle, Wash.) each added 10 points apiece, as well as three and eight rebounds, respectively.
The Redhawks took the early lead, scoring 11 points in the first minute and a half of the contest, before allowing a layup by Chicago State's Paris Williams. Seattle U again increased their lead to 11, leading 18-7, after a layup by Adhiambo at the 14:33 mark. They kept the lead at 11 or higher, leading by as much as 16 at the 11:37 mark, until 4:15 when the lead was decreased to nine with another layup by Williams. This would prove to be the last time the score margin was in single digits.
Seattle U was again able to increase the lead and did not let the lead decrease out of double digits for the rest of the half, again leading by 16 at the halfway point, 37-21.
The Redhawks came out of the break with increased offensive domination, as Sowell scored a layup and two free-throw shots within the first minute and a half of the second half to put Seattle U up by 20 at the 18:47 mark, 41-21.
At the 15:25 mark, two free throws by Natalie Marlowe decreased the lead to 18, but with a made free throw by Sowell and a three-pointer by Maggie McCarthy (Burlingame, Calif.) right under the 15-minute mark, the Redhawks led by 20+ for the rest of the contest.
Towards the end of the contest, the Redhawks led by as much as 38 two different times, as Adhiambo made a free throw at the 2:21 mark to put the Redhawks up 79-41, and with a layup by Renee Dillard-Brown (Seattle, Wash.) with 1:31 left to put them up 81-43.
Two players scored in double figures for the Cougars (6-22), led by Williams who scored 22 points, shooting 9-for-21 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Williams added seven rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Caneka Davis also added 10 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the field, and recorded three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
The Redhawks out-rebounded the Cougars 55-22 and shot 48.5 percent (33-for-68) from the field compared to the Cougars' 31.4 percent (16-for-51).
Seattle University (16-9) returns home to face UC Riverside at the Connolly Center North Court on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m.
