Despite two match wins from Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.), the Seattle University women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Nevada Saturday at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore.
Wurden claimed the Redhawks' only point with a singles victory over Gabriela Eufrasio at the number five spot. She needed just two sets to take down Eufrasio, winning the match 6-4, 6-1.
Wurden's other victory came in the doubles competition. She teamed up with Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) to take down Nevada's number two doubles team of Michelle Okhremchuk and Faith Bassiouny by a score of 8-5.
In the sixth singles position, Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) nearly claimed a second point for Seattle U. After losing the first set 6-2 to Nevada's Rymma Maslova, she fought back for a 5-7 second set victory, forcing a tiebreak to decide the match. Lucas hung tough throughout the tiebreak but fell at the end, 10-7.
Despite the win at number two doubles, the Redhawks couldn't pull out one more doubles victory to take the doubles point. At number three singles, the duo of Lucas and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) fell 8-5 to the Wolfpack's Eufraiso and Sophie Stevens while SU's top doubles team of Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) feel 8-3 to Nevada's Emma Verbane and Juliette Legendre.
The Redhawks look to end the weekend with a victory Sunday, Feb. 19 when they take on Puget Sound at 5:00 at the Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash.
