The Seattle University women's tennis team jumped head-first into their 2012 spring season by playing two matches Friday: a 7-0 loss at Washington State and 6-1 defeat against Idaho

Seattle U won two matches on the day, both coming from the racquet of Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.). During the number five singles match against Idaho, Weissmann dispatched the Vandals' Alejandra Lozano in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-3 to earn a point for the Redhawks.
Weissmann also won her doubles match against Idaho, as she and doubles partner Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Idaho pair Sophie Vickers and Almudena Sanz, 8-6. Idaho won the other two doubles matches, however, and took the meet's doubles point.
In the number six singles position against the Vandals, Seattle U's Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) forced Idaho's Beatriz Flores into a tiebreak before ultimately falling 6-3, 3-6, 14-12.
The Redhawks began the day at Washington State, losing 7-0 to the Cougars. Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and doubles partner Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) battled tough in their number one doubles match against Washington State's Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina, but the WSU duo ran away at the end, winning 8-4.
In the singles competition, Lambert faced #123-ranked Luzina in the fifth spot. After dropping the first set 6-1, she fought back and claimed four games of her own in the second. Those four weren't enough, however, and she fell 6-1, 6-4.
The Redhawks face another busy day Saturday, Jan. 28, as they again play two matches. They start the day with a 9:00 a.m. match at Lewis-Clark State and then travel to Spokane, Wash. to take on Eastern Washington at 5:30 p.m.
