The combination of a 17-point first half cushion, five players scoring in double figures and solid shooting from the free throw line helped guide the Seattle University women's basketball team an 89-80 victory over Boise State Sunday afternoon. The win not only marked SU's first road victory of the season, but brought the Redhawks to .500 on the year at 4-4.

Seattle U put together a season-best effort from the free throw line, shooting 82.5 percent (33-for-40) in the game, including being nearly perfect in the first half, going 14-for-15. The Redhawks shot 46.0 percent (23-for-50) from the field and 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from downtown.

The Redhawks opened up action with an 8-2 run off a fastbreak basket from sophomore Sylvia Shephard (Alta Loma, Wash.), who made her fourth career start. She went on to score nine points, along with a pair of boards, two assists and a steal.

Their offensive efforts were complimented by a strong defensive game, which forced three Bronco turnovers over a five minute span.

A Daidra Brown (Seattle, Wash.) jumper at 11:19 gave the Redhawks their first double figure lead of the game, 19-9, but the Broncos responded with a 5-0 unanswered run to continue to keep it a close contest. Four consecutive Ashley Ward (Irvine, Calif.) points from the stripe and an Elle Kerfoot (Surrey, B.C.) triple off a Talisa Rhea (Juneau, Alaska) assist reestablished the Redhawks double figure lead, 26-16, at 8:17.

SU closed out the first half riding a 16-10 run, including three baskets from beyond the arc, to head into halftime holding a 48-31 advantage.

In the second half, BSU came out with urgency and took off on a 10-0 run over the first minute-and-a-half of action to cut SU's once sizeable lead down to seven, 48-41. Despite the Broncos' rally, Ward sailed in a three-pointer off a Rhea assist to make it a double figure game again and preserve the Redhawks double digit advantage.

SU would teeter around a 10-point lead until BSU opened up an 11-2 run to make it a two-point contest, 65-63, at 9:41.

The Redhawks responded with a 5-0 run to continue to put distance, but the Broncos continued to claw back and made it a one possession game again at 4:11, 73-71.

Showcasing their season-long progression, Seattle U remained composed and responded with 10-0 run, headlined by Kacie Sowell's (Ventura, Calif.) four points and two steals entering the final two minutes of play to hold an 83-71 lead.

Kerfoot and Brown would be sent to the line three times in the final minute of action, going a perfect 6-for-6 to close things out.

Leading the Redhawk offense was Sowell, who tied a career high in points, with 19, and established a new career record from the stripe, going 11-for-15. Scoring 17 points apiece were Kerfoot, who scored a career-best five three-pointers, and Ward, who tallied career high records in total points and free throws, with eight. Rhea scored 13 points and made team high five assists, while Brown had 10 points, including going 8-for-8 from the stripe for a career high.

SU, who earned their first consecutive win of the season, forced 23 BSU (4-4) turnovers, which they converted into 34 points.

Seattle U will next open up a three-game home stand, beginning with Portland on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 12:30 p.m.
