Weekly Release: Long Beach State and Boise State

This Week for the Redhawks: Following their runner-up finish at the third annual Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, the Redhawks (2-4) remain at home to host Long Beach State (2-4) on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Connolly Center. Two days later, SU hits the road for a solo game at Boise State (4-3) at 1 p.m. PT.

Last Time Out: SU opened up the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament behind a 74-56 victory and 19-point Elle Kerfoot performance over San Francisco on Nov. 25 to advance to the championship game.

The following day, SU kept pace with Akron in the first half, but the Zips were able to put together a double figure cushion in the second half to hand the Redhawks an 85-74 loss.

On Deck: Seattle U will open up a three-game home slate versus WCC opponents next week. The Redhawks host Portland (Dec. 11), Santa Clara (Dec. 13) and Saint Mary's (Dec. 17), before traveling to Little Rock, Ark. on Dec. 21 to face ULAR.

Sowell Named College Sports Madness POW: Sophomore Kacie Sowell was named this week's College Sports Madness Independent Player of the Week. She is the first Redhawk to earn a national honor since SU reclassified back to DI.

This season she has started all six games and is the team's leader in both points (13.7) and rebounds (8.3).  Sowell has scored in double figures in every game this year, tallying a pair of double-doubles along the way. She is coming off a combined 25-point and 17-rebound performance at the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, where she was integral in helping guide SU to the championship game of the annual tournament.

Seattle U Thanksgiving All-Tournament Team: Senior Elle Kerfoot and sophomore Ashley Ward were named to the Seattle U Thanksgiving All-Tournament Team for their contributions in the two-day tourney. Ward tallied 14 points in both games, while Kerfoot posted a season-high 19 points on Nov. 25 versus USF.

For the second consecutive season the Redhawks fell in the championship game of their annual Thanksgiving Tournament.

A Familiar Face: Friday's meeting with Long Beach State will be the second time at SU that head coach Joan Bonvicini will face her former program. Bonvicini coached at CSULB for 12 seasons, guiding the 49ers to back-to-back Final Four appearances in 1987 and 1988.

Clark and Williamson Make SU Debut: Freshmen guard Makenna Clark and center Jessi Williamson made their Redhawk debut on Nov. 25 versus San Francisco. The duo combined for five bench minutes, with Williamson earning her first career block.

McCarthy's Back: After missing the 2010-11 season due to injury, senior Maggie McCarthy has returned to form. She earned her first start of the year versus Akron on Nov. 26.

Redhawks Sign Three to NLI's: Seattle U signed three student-athletes to NLI's on Nov. 10. Joining the Redhawks for the 2012-13 campaign are: Catherine "Cat" Perez (Palo Alto, Calif.), Taelor Ross (Portland, Ore.) and Kristin Stoffel (Everett, Wash.). The incoming class of 2016 boasts a trio of versatile players, who are all above six-feet tall.

Redhawks Sweep Preseason College Sports Madness Honors: The College Sports Madness Preseason All-Independent Team saw strong representation from Seattle U as head coach Joan Bonvicini was named Coach of the Year, senior Elle Kerfoot was voted Player of the Year and Renee Dillard-Brown was named Freshman of the Year.

Kerfoot and sophomore Ashley Ward were also named to the first team, while junior Daidra Brown and senior Amani Butler rounded out the SU selections with second team accolades.

Status Update: Senior Carley Butcher and freshman Kim Flournoy will both miss action during the 2011-12 season due to injury; while freshman Monique Abbs is currently inactive.

The Captains: Seniors Elle Kerfoot and Talisa Rhea have been selected this season's co-captains. Kerfoot was a co-captain last year, as well.

Final Year of Independence: 2011 will mark SU's final season playing as an NCAA DI Independent. On July 1, 2012 Seattle U will officially join the Western Athletic Conference as full members.

Scouting Long Beach State: Long Beach State travels to SU riding a 2-4 overall record. They are coming off a 1-1 road trip in New York, defeating Columbia 70-61 on Nov. 25, before falling 78-73 to Iona the next day.

Tipesa Moorer leads the 49er offense, averaging 11.5 ppg, but is 0-4 from beyond the arc. Ella Clark follows, averaging 10.8 ppg and a team-leading 7.0 rpg.
