Weekly Release: Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament

This Week for the Redhawks: The Seattle University women's basketball team will host its third annual Seattle Thanksgiving Tournament from Friday, Nov. 25 to Saturday, Nov. 26.  Akron (1-3), Loyola Chicago (3-1) and San Francisco (1-4) are slated to participate in the tournament this year. SU will open up the weekend with USF on Friday at 8 p.m., following game one between Akron and Loyola Chicago at 6 p.m.

The following day, there will be a consolation game at 6 p.m. and a championship game at 8 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Redhawks (1-3) dropped their third consecutive game to San Diego on Nov. 19, 82-65 at KeyArena. The Toreros took control of the game early in the first half and Seattle U was unable to get the offensive surge to bounce back into the win column.

Junior Daidra Brown paced SU with 17 points, while sophomore Kacie Sowell scored in double figures for her fourth straight game (12 points).

On Deck: Seattle U will remain at home, hosting third season head coach Joan Bonvicini's former program Long Beach State on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Two days later, the Redhawks will travel to Boise, Idaho to face the BSU Broncos at 1 p.m. PT.

Third Annual Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament: This season's Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament features a two-day four-game slate from Nov. 25-26. Participating in the annual event are: Akron, Loyola Chicago and San Francisco.

Sowell Continues to Headline Offense: A year of experience under her belt, hard work in the off season and dominating performances to open the year exemplify sophomore Kacie Sowell. The 6-2 post has scored in double figures in all four games this season and is the only player to boast that feat. She lead's the squad in both points (14.3) and rebounds (8.3).

Time to Rebound: SU's resilient season-opening victory over UCSB has been followed up by three consecutive losses. They will look to rebound at this weekend's tournament and get back on track.

Jesuit Basketball Spotlight: Seattle U's tournament-opening game versus San Francisco is featured as one of this season's Jesuit Basketball Spotlight competitions. The matchup is one of more than 90 games this season between teams from the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States.

Shephard Makes First Career Start: Sophomore Sylvia Shephard made her first career start versus San Diego on Nov. 19. The guard tallied a pair of points and rebounds, in addition to a steal.

Redhawks Sign Three to NLI's: Seattle U signed three student-athletes to NLI's on Nov. 10. Joining the Redhawks for the 2012-13 campaign are: Catherine "Cat" Perez (Palo Alto, Calif.), Taelor Ross (Portland, Ore.) and Kristin Stoffel (Everett, Wash.). The incoming class of 2016 boasts a trio of versatile players, who are all above six-feet tall.

Kerfoot Plays for Canada at World University Games: Senior Elle Kerfoot was selected to the Canadian World University Games roster this past summer. She is the first Redhawk to be selected to a youth national team program since head coach Joan Bonvicini took over the program in 2009.

Redhawks Sweep Preseason College Sports Madness Honors: The College Sports Madness Preseason All-Independent Team saw strong representation from Seattle U as head coach Joan Bonvicini was named Coach of the Year, senior Elle Kerfoot was voted Player of the Year and Renee Dillard-Brown was named Freshman of the Year.

Kerfoot and sophomore Ashley Ward were also named to the first team, while junior Daidra Brown and senior Amani Butler rounded out the SU selections with second team accolades.

Status Update: Senior Carley Butcher and freshman Kim Flournoy will both miss action during the 2011-12 season due to injury; while freshman Monique Abbs is currently inactive.

The Captains: Seniors Elle Kerfoot and Talisa Rhea have been selected this season's co-captains. Kerfoot was a co-captain last year, as well.

Final Year of Independence: 2011 will mark SU's final season playing as an NCAA DI Independent. On July 1, 2012 Seattle U will officially join the Western Athletic Conference as full members.

Scouting San Francisco: The Dons of San Francisco (1-4) currently are riding a three-game losing skid after falling 64-50 to UC Davis on Nov. 22. Their lone win came on Nov. 13 at San Jose State, 88-77.

Leading USF is Rheina Ale, who is averaging 14.2 points and 6.8 rebounds. Whitney Daniels is the squad's rebounding leader, with 8.4 per game.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced San Francisco: This will be the first meeting in program history between the Redhawks and Dons.

A Look at Akron and Loyola Chicago: Akron travels west riding a 1-3 record. They have dropped their last two games, including an overtime edging by St. Francis, 80-79, on Nov. 22. Rachel Tecca leads the Zips, averaging 14.3 points and 6.8 boards in four starts.

After opening the year going 3-0, Loyola Chicago (4-1) fell to Eastern Michigan, 63-55, on Nov. 20. Leading LUC is Patrice King, who is averaging 16.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Seattle U has never faced either program before.
