Weekly Release: San Diego

This Week for the Redhawks: The Seattle University women's basketball team will look to get back on track this weekend after dropping consecutive games. The Redhawks (1-2) host San Diego (1-1) on Saturday, Nov. 19, at KeyArena at Seattle Center in game one of the SU basketball doubleheader. Tipoff is slated for 12:15 p.m.

Last Time Out: After controlling the game for a majority of the first half, a decisive 13-0 rally minutes before halftime by Washington proved to be the difference maker in the Redhawks 72-53 loss at UW on Nov. 16.

In the intra-city rivalry matchup, sophomore Ashley Ward paced Seattle U's trio of double figure scorers, with a career-high 16 points. Elle Kerfoot and Kacie Sowell each tallied 11 points apiece.

On Deck: SU remains at home to host the third annual Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament from Nov. 25-26. The two-day Friday-Saturday, four-game tournament will feature a trio of squads the Redhawks have never faced before in program history in: Akron, Loyola Chicago and San Francisco.

Redhawk Doubleheader: Saturday's game versus San Diego at 12:15 p.m. marks game one of SU's basketball doubleheader. Following the women's game, the men's basketball team hosts their season opener versus San Francisco at 3:10 p.m. Purchasing one ticket will provide admittance into both games hosted at KeyArena.

Ward Cruises to Career-High: Behind 11 first half points, sophomore Ashley Ward scored a career-high and team-leading 16 points at Washington on Nov. 16. The second year guard has been a fixture in the starting lineup since the end of last season and is the team's third-leading scorer, with 8.7 ppg.

Looking to Rebound: After their season-opening victory over UCSB on Nov. 11, 60-55, the Redhawks have dropped their last two games to fall to 1-2 on the early season. They will look to get back on track this weekend and reach .500 versus San Diego.

Post Presence: Sophomore Kacie Sowell has taken command at the post for SU this season, after playing primarily bench minutes as a freshman. Sowell has scored in double figures in all three games this year and is the team's leader in scoring (15.0) and rebounding (8.7). She earned her first double-double of the year versus UC Davis on Nov. 13, tallying 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Home Slate: For the first time since transitioning to DI, the Redhawks will play the majority of their 2011-12 games at home. SU boasts a 17-home game schedule and their road slate comprises primarily of opponents based on the West Coast.

Lemon Makes Debut: In addition to classmate Renee Dillard-Brown, who's seen minutes in all three games this season, freshman Jasmine Lemon made her collegiate debut at Washington on Nov. 16. In one minute of action, she dished her first career assist.

Redhawks Sign Three to NLI's: Seattle U signed three student-athletes to NLI's on Nov. 10. Joining the Redhawks for the 2012-13 campaign are: Catherine "Cat" Perez (Palo Alto, Calif.), Taelor Ross (Portland, Ore.) and Kristin Stoffel (Everett, Wash.). The incoming class of 2016 boasts a trio of versatile players, who are all above six-feet tall.

Kerfoot Plays for Canada at World University Games: Senior Elle Kerfoot was selected to the Canadian World University Games roster this past summer. She is the first Redhawk to be selected to a youth national team program since head coach Joan Bonvicini took over the program in 2009.

Redhawks Sweep Preseason College Sports Madness Honors: The College Sports Madness Preseason All-Independent Team saw strong representation from Seattle U as head coach Joan Bonvicini was named Coach of the Year, senior Elle Kerfoot was voted Player of the Year and Renee Dillard-Brown was named Freshman of the Year.

Kerfoot and sophomore Ashley Ward were also named to the first team, while junior Daidra Brown and senior Amani Butler rounded out the SU selections with second team accolades.

Veteran Lineup: With the addition of senior transfer Talisa Rhea, who sat out last season, the Redhawk starting lineup returns a veteran experienced group. The squad will be anchored by senior point guard Elle Kerfoot, who returns to build upon her standout career.

Status Update: Senior Carley Butcher and freshman Kim Flournoy will both miss action during the 2011-12 season due to injury; while freshman Monique Abbs is currently inactive.

The Captains: Seniors Elle Kerfoot and Talisa Rhea have been selected this season's co-captains. Kerfoot was a co-captain last year, as well.

Final Year of Independence: 2011 will mark SU's final season playing as an NCAA DI Independent. On July 1, 2012 Seattle U will officially join the Western Athletic Conference as a full member.

Scouting San Diego: San Diego opened up the year defeating NAIA Cal State San Marcos 80-56 on Nov. 11 at home. After a six day break in play, the Toreros were outlasted by Eastern Washington, 68-57, in Cheney, Wash. on Nov. 17.

The USD offense is paced by senior guard Dominique Conners 16.0 ppg. She also leads the team in steals, with six. Kameron Knutson is the squad's rebounding leader, averaging 10.0 rpg.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced San Diego: The Redhawks dropped a 78-56 decision at San Diego last season on Nov. 21, 2010 in their first-ever meeting with USD.

After going into halftime down 34-33, the Redhawks were unable to create a second half offensive surge to push past the Toreros. San Diego remained in control of the contest and outscored SU 44-23 in the final half of regulation.

For Seattle U, Elle Kerfoot and Daidra Brown scored in double figures, with 11 and 10 points, respectively. While USD's  Emily Hatch paced both sides with 23 points.
