"This was a game of finishing chances. Both sides created a handful and Texas finished one off a corner kick. Throughout the game, possession was back and forth. I am not disappointed in how we played and thought we showed some great composure today," said head coach Julie Woodward.
The Longhorns' offense opened the match sailing in a pair of shots, as they pushed the ball immediately into the Redhawk box. Their quick pace and offensive push was well defended by the SU backline, as they were able to boot the ball into the UT half of the field and open up Seattle U's offensive chances.
The first half saw play primarily between the 18-yard boxes, as both defenses prevented many scoring chances. The Redhawks held a slight shot advantage, 6-4, heading into halftime and goalkeeper Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) was solid in orchestrating the SU defense.
Similarly, the second half was a defensive battle, with both sides fighting for possession and chances on goal. For every Longhorn shot, the Redhawks were there to counter with their own.
In the 73rd minute, UT broke up the scoreless run off a successful set piece. Kylie Doniak sent in a Longhorn corner kick and found Brooke Gilbert in the box. Gilbert was able to find an opening and hand Texas a 1-0 advantage midway through the final half of regulation.
Mary Hill (Mercer Island, Wash.) responded immediately with a shot on frame, but UT's Alexa Gaul was there to make the save. The Redhawks continued to work to even the game; however their efforts were unrewarded before time expired.
The Redhawks and Longhorns were deadlock in shots, with 13 apiece; however UT held a 7-4 on frame advantage. Texas also led 7-3 in corner kicks.
Goverde would go on to tally six saves in the match to bring her season total to 56.
Seattle U (10-6) will return home host their annual Senior Day ceremony on Friday, Oct. 28 versus Montana. The ceremony will be held prior to kickoff at 3 p.m.
