Weekly Release: San Jose State and Sacramento State

This Week for the Redhawks: The Seattle University men's soccer team returns home to host San Jose State (4-4-3 overall, 1-2 MPSF) and Sacramento State (6-4-1 overall, 2-1 MPSF) in a rematch of last week's games. SU will take on the Spartans on Friday, Oct. 14. The start time of that match has been moved up to 1 p.m. They will wrap up the weekend with the Hornets on Sunday, Oct. 16, in a 1 p.m. contest.

Last Time Out: The Redhawks dropped back-to-back heartbreaking 2-1 decisions last week. On Oct. 7, SU took SJSU into overtime minutes, but a defensive miscue handed Seattle U the extra time loss. In the match, Mikey Ramos scored his first career goal.

Two days later, the Redhawks fell, 2-1, in the final minutes of regulation to Sacramento State.

On Deck: SU will continue their home stand against New Mexico and UNLV, facing the Lobos on Friday, Oct. 21, and the Rebels on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Rematch Time: The Redhawks face San Jose State and Sacramento State at home this weekend, in a rematch of last week's competition. In addition to facing SJSU and CSUS again, Seattle U will host CSU Bakersfield in a rematch to conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m.

REDOUT Block Party: Prior to Sunday's match, all are welcome to join the festivities at the second annual SU REDOUT Block Party. There will be food, entertainment and prizes, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The block party will be on 13th Avenue, between Cherry and Columbia.

And Many More to Come: Mikey Ramos' successful volley from the top of the box at San Jose State on Oct. 7, marked his first career goal as a Redhawk. The junior transfer has been an offensive spark plug this season and has a goal and a pair of assists on the year. 

Home Cookin': After playing their last five straight on the road in California, the Redhawks will play in the friendly confines of Championship Field for their next four conference competitions.

Snap that Skid: The Redhawks will look to snap their six-game skid this weekend at home.

Ranked Opponents: The Redhawks have faced three ranked opponents in 2011, nearly defeating No. 13/18 UCLA, 2-1, on Sept. 23. They dropped a 3-1 decision to then-No. 9 UCSB on Aug. 27, before taking then-No. 23 UW to a scoreless draw on Sept. 11.

Striar Scores: Sophomore Ben Striar scored his first goal of the season off a penalty kick at Sacramento State on Oct. 9.

This season SU is 2-2 in penalty kick opportunities.

The Newbies: The Redhawk roster boasts 14 newcomers, with freshman Travis Heim leading the squad with a pair of goals and an assist.

The Captains: The men's soccer captains for the 2011 season are: Marshall Kosaka, Elliot Richards and Demaci Roussos.

Scouting San Jose State: San Jose State is 4-4-3 overall, 1-2 MPSF on the year. They head into this weekend's match after splitting results this past weekend. The Spartans beat Seattle U in overtime 2-1 on Oct. 7, and lost to CSU Bakersfield, 2-0, two days later.

Nick Cashmere and Dylan Murphy lead the offense with three goals each. Cashmere and Dan Addeigo are the team's assists leaders, with three.

In goal, Jonathon Lester has started ten games. He has a 1.12 goals against average, with 44 saves and two shutouts. Doug Highton has played in two matches, tallying a 0.88 average and three saves.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced San Jose State: The Redhawks took the Spartans to overtime on Oct. 7, before falling 2-1.  Mikey Ramos evened the score in the 79th minute with a blast from the 18-yard line, but San Jose State scored four minutes into the first overtime period to end the match.

Scouting Sacramento State: Sacramento State brings a 6-4-1 overall, 2-1 MPSF record into the weekend. Last weekend, they defeated the Redhawks, 2-1, on Oct. 9, after suffering a 3-0 shutout by CSU Bakersfield two days prior.

The Hornets' top goal scorers are Max Alvarez and Chris Bettencourt, who both have tallied four goals in 11 games. Alvarez also leads the team with three assists.

Three players have spent time between the pipes for CSUS, with Cesear Castillo carrying the load. In seven matches, he has a 1.47 goals against average, 39 saves and two shutouts.  Bryan Oliver has played in three matches and has a 1.67 goals against average, four saves, and one shutout, while Federico Antonelli saw action in one match, making two saves and earning the shutout.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced Sacramento State: SU faced Sacramento State last Sunday, Oct. 9, falling 2-1.  Ben Striar evened the game, one-all, with a penalty kick in the 46th minute, but Max Bauman slipped one past SU goalie Jake Feener with three minutes left in the match to guide CSUS to victory.
