Paced by an even-par 72 from senior Caitlin McCleary (The Dalles, Ore.) as well as a season-best round from freshman Monica Keo (Oahu, Hawaii), the Seattle University women's golf team is in 12th place after the first round Monday of the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico State at the NMSU Golf Course.
McCleary is currently tied for ninth place after the first 18 holes, three shots behind co-leaders Chelsey Cothran of Baylor and Teo Poplawski of Idaho. She is tied for the lead in birdies with five and in par-five scoring at three-under-par. Keo shot three-over-par 75, the best round of her collegiate career, to finish the day in a tie for 27th place.
Lori Pearson (Seattle, Wash.) is in a tie for 46th place after shooting five-over-par 77, while Nicole Gaddie (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted a first-round score of 79 (+7) to end the day in a tie for 64th place. Shannon Quinn (Shoreline, Wash.) shot 84 (+12) in the opening round and is currently in 88th place.
As a team, Seattle University combined for a first-round score of 303 (+15) to land in 12th place, but the Redhawks are only nine shots behind fifth-place Colorado State with two rounds still to play. Long Beach State shot one-under-par 287 to take the opening-round lead, one stroke ahead of Baylor.
The second round of the tournament will take place Tuesday, Oct. 11, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. local time. The third and final round is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 12.
