Weekly Release: San Jose State and Sacramento State

This Week for the Redhawks: The Seattle University men's soccer team (1-5-2 overall, 0-1 MPSF) heads to Northern California for a pair of matches at San Jose State (3-3-3 overall, 0-1 MPSF) and Sacramento State (5-3-1 overall, 1-0 MPSF) this weekend. SU takes on the Spartans on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and closes out their five-game road swing on Sunday, Oct. 9, with the Hornets in a 1 p.m. game.

Last Time Out: The Redhawks dropped a 3-0 decision to Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 2, in Bakersfield, Calif. After keeping the game scoreless for 52 minutes, CSUB went on to score three second half goals.

On Deck: SU will face San Jose State (Oct. 14) and Sacramento State (Oct. 16) again next week, this time at home in the friendly confines of Championship Field.

California Dreamin': The Redhawks are wrapping up a stretch of five consecutive matches in California this weekend at SJSU and CSUS.

Time for MPSF Play: This season the Redhawks will host five conference games at Championship Field, while playing five on the road to conclude regular season action.

Snap that Skid: The Redhawks will look to snap their four-game skid this weekend in Northern California.

Ranked Opponents: The Redhawks have faced three ranked opponents in 2011, nearly defeating No. 13/18 UCLA, 2-1, on Sept. 23. They dropped a 3-1 decision to then-No. 9 UCSB on Aug. 27, before taking then-No. 23 UW to a scoreless draw on Sept. 11.

The Newbies: The Redhawk roster boasts 14 newcomers, with freshman Travis Heim leading the squad with a pair of goals and an assist.

The Captains: The men's soccer captains for the 2011 season are: Marshall Kosaka, Elliot Richards and Demaci Roussos.

Scouting San Jose State: San Jose State is 3-3-3 on the year and heads into this weekend's match riding a two-game losing streak. The Spartans lost their conference opener to Sacramento State, 1-0, on Oct. 2.

Nick Cashmere and Dylan Murphy lead the offense with three goals each. Dan Addeigo is the team's assists leader, with three.

In goal, Jonathon Lester has started eight games. He has a 1.04 goals against average, with 32 saves and two shutouts. Doug Highton has played in two matches, tallying a 0.88 average and three saves.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced San Jose State: The Redhawks were 0-1-1 with the Spartans in 2010. On Oct. 8, the two teams battled to 0-0 draw. SU dropped the grudge match, 1-0, on Oct. 17.

Scouting Sacramento State: Sacramento State brings a 5-3-1 overall record into the weekend, most recently winning at conference foe San Jose State, 1-0, to kickoff MPSF competition.

The Hornets are led by Chris Bettencourt, who's tallied four goals and nine points in nine games. Nine Hornets have tallied at least one assist on the season, with four players tallying two dishes on the year.

Three players have spent time between the pipes for CSUS, with Cesear Castillo carrying the load. In six matches, he has a 1.24 goals against average, 32 saves and two shutouts.  Bryan Oliver has played in two matches and has 2.00 goals against average, and Federico Antonelli saw action in one match, making two saves and earning the shutout.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced Sacramento State: SU split their season series with Sacramento State in 2010, with each team earning victories at home.  The Redhawks defeated CSUS on Oct. 10, behind a last second goal from Nico de la Cruz. They then dropped a 2-0 decision in Sacramento, Calif. on Oct. 15.
