The Seattle University women's tennis team began its 2011-12 competitive season Friday at the Cougar Classic, hosted by Washington State at the WSU Outdoor Courts.

After dropping a three-set match to Charlotta Hjalmarsson of Montana State (6-2, 1-6, 6-1) in the flight one main draw, Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) defeated Dorothy Chong of Lewis-Clark State in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to advance in the consolation draw. In the flight two main draw, Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) lost to Montana State's Ellie Crum (6-1, 7-6), while Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) fell to Elizaveta Luzina of Washington State (6-0, 6-0).

Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the flight three main draw with a straight-set victory over Loreto Ramos of Lewis-Clark State (6-0, 6-1). Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) lost to Chelsea Patton of Eastern Washington (6-4, 6-1) and will start Saturday in the flight three consolation bracket. In the flight four main draw, Natalie Martin (Phoenix, Ariz.) lost to Liana Bates of Montana State (6-0, 6-4), and Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) fell to Portland State's Marina Todd (6-2, 6-3).

In flight one doubles, Schwab and Wurden defeated Oliveira and Miranda Duggan of Lewis-Clark State, 8-2, before losing to Andjela Kankaras and Charlotte Koning of Washington State in the quarterfinals, 8-3. In flight two doubles, Weissmann and Lucas lost to Molly Knox and Beatriz Flores of Idaho, 8-3, while Sugimoto and Martin lost to Todd and Nayanatara Vadali of Portland State, 8-5, before defeating Ramos and Marina Wold of Lewis-Clark State, 8-2, to advance in the flight two doubles consolation bracket.

Action will continue Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. with doubles matches, followed by singles competition.
