Kaytlyn Dill (Bothell, Wash.) led the Redhawks with six kills, while Allison Farley (Happy Valley, Ore.) earned five kills and four total blocks. Alec Goodrie (Springfield, Ore.) also picked up five kills along with a service ace, five digs, and three block assists, and Karli Pedone (Granite Bay, Calif.) contributed five kills as well. Allie Hoskins (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the Redhawk defense with nine digs.
Portland (3-5) scored the first six points of the match to take the early lead in the first set. The Redhawks pulled to within three at 10-7, but the Pilots ran off five unanswered points to extend their advantage to 15-7. The two teams would basically exchange points the rest of the way, with Portland's Rachel Femling closing out the set with a kill.
Seattle U scored four of the first five points in the second set, but Portland responded with a 6-1 scoring run to pull ahead, 7-5. The Pilots extended their lead to 13-8 on back-to-back blocks, both of them involving Bea Loper. The Redhawks pulled to within two at 17-15 on consecutive kills from Goodrie and Dill, but Portland closed out the set on an 8-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, after a kill by Farley and a Portland attack error cut the Pilot lead to 6-4, Loper earned three straight kills and a block assist to extend the home team's advantage to 10-4. Seattle U rattled off a 6-1 scoring run to come within one at 11-10, but the Pilots scored three unanswered points to stop the Redhawk comeback. Seattle U pulled to within two at 17-15, but Portland scored six straight points and then, after consecutive kills by Dill, closed out the match with a kill from Autumn Wedan.
Ariel Usher led the Pilots with 11 kills, while Loper earned eight kills, a .636 hitting percentage, and four total blocks. Monica Jordan and Sam Moore combined for 30 assists, Jessica Nguyen earned two service aces in the Pilots' late third-set scoring run, and Katie Mardesich led the backline with seven defensive digs.
Seattle University (1-8) returns home for three straight matches within the Seattle city limits, starting Thursday, Sept. 8, at Washington beginning at 7 p.m. The Redhawks will then welcome Fresno State to the Connolly Center Saturday, Sept. 10, for a 7 p.m. contest, followed by a home match against Gonzaga Wednesday, Sept. 14, starting at 6 p.m.
