Seattle University women's soccer senior Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) was named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of Week, following her career-best performance this past weekend at the Husky NIKE Invitational. The Redhawk goalkeeper tallied 17 saves on her way to garnering the tournament Defensive MVP award. The CS360.com honor is the first NCAA Division I national team of the week selection earned by any member of the Seattle U women's soccer program since reclassifying back to DI.
"Madison has played outstanding in each of our games thus far. To win big games you need a keeper that can make a big save. She has done that and more. She is an incredible competitor and leader on the field, and is going to continue to have a great year," said head coach Julie Woodward.
The SU co-captain guided the Redhawks to the biggest win in program history over then-No. 8 Portland on Sept. 2. Goverde flawlessly orchestrated Seattle U's defensive efforts in the Redhawks 2-0 shutout over the perennial powerhouse Pilots.
Two days later she posted 11 saves versus the Huskies of Washington, a 2010 NCAA Tournament participant, including saving a UW penalty kick.
This season, Goverde has started and played all 543:54 minutes between the pipes. She's tallied a 0.83 goals against average, 31 saves and three shutout victories.
The Redhawks (4-2) will remain on the road this weekend, as they travel to Portland, Ore. for the Viking Soccer Classic. SU will face Cal Poly on Friday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m. and wrap up action two days later with host-Portland State in a 2 p.m. match.
