Hi, my name is Bruce Bones giving 'The Skinny' on the Women's Soccer team. I was recently hired to give a visual and tangible view on the bone structure of the body.
I try to stay modest, but usually people only want to touch me. Normally, I wouldn't pay attention to the groups coming into the athletic training room, such as the women's soccer team. However, something about the girls intrigued me. As the first few girls arrived in the athletic training room after their first two-a-day practice, they came in looking not much different than I do, like death. I knew I could relate to how they felt. Like my friend the Mummy once said, "death is only the beginning." And that is exactly where they were at.
On Wednesday morning, the girls spoke of a grueling challenge called the Beep Test. As girls came in and out of the training room, I saw anxiety and fear in their eyes. Treatments were being performed by the trainers and Gatorade bottles were being filled in preparation for the test that would decide their destinies. I was confident in all the girls' abilities. They have worked hard all summer to prepare for what was to come. Naturally I was right! The girls did amazing and the team pulled together and turned their anxiety and fears into confidence.
As the days went on, their confidence grew as each two-a-day ended. The girls grew as a family as they all endured every last bit of exhaustion, pain, and soreness in their bodies. Everyday the girls came into the athletic training room to take ice baths. The girls not in the ice baths decided to do more work by dancing on the Wii video game. Being my shy self, I was too nervous to ask these extraordinary beautiful young women to dance. I timidly stood in my usual corner admiring from a far. Just when I thought my hope was lost, a radiant redhead walked over to me and her eyes locked with my sockets. It was on! We shared a dance that I wish could have lasted a lifetime.
Since the girls were so exhausted from Wii dancing, oh and I guess two-a-days, the coaches figured they needed a day off at the lake. Much fun was had. As the girls enjoyed each other's company, they grew stronger and I could tell that this was not just an ordinary team, but much more like a family.
