Josh Kutz (Seattle, Wash.) put Seattle U on the board in the top of the second inning with a solo home run over the center field wall. BYU quickly evened the score in the bottom of the second as Alex Wolfe launched a home run over the wall in center field.
In the top of the third inning, Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.) led off with a single to center field and stole second base. Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.) hit his seventh home run of the season over the wall in right-center field to give the Redhawks a 3-1 advantage.
BYU (23-21) answered right back in the bottom of the third as the Cougars put together a two-out rally, starting with a single and a stolen base by Jaycob Brugman. Ryan Bernal drove in Brugman with a single to right field, and Wolfe followed with his second home run of the game, this time over the fence in right field, to put the home team ahead, 4-3.
The Cougars broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Dane Nielsen led off with a single, followed by a single from Brugman. Bernal hit BYU's third home run of the game, a three-run shot over the wall in center field, to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead and chase Redhawk starter Arlo Evasick (Port Ludlow, Wash.) from the game.
Dillon Robinson led off the sixth inning with a solo home run, followed by a single by Wes Guenther and a walk drawn by Nielsen. Stephen Wells drove in Guenther with a single, and pinch hitter Brock Luker earned an RBI single that scored Nielsen. The Cougars scored another run later in the sixth as well as two runs in the seventh inning.
The Seattle U offense could not take advantage of scoring chances in both the seventh and ninth innings, leaving the bases loaded in each frame without scoring a run. Evasick took the loss for the Redhawks, allowing nine hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.
BYU starter Taylor Cole settled down after giving up the two home runs, completing seven innings while allowing seven hits, two walks, and three runs. Cole struck out nine Redhawk batters during the contest, striking out the side in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Seattle University (18-23) looks to finish the series on a winning note Saturday, May 7, with the first pitch scheduled for just after 1 p.m. local time.
