After losing the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, 7-4, the Seattle University baseball team scored early and the pitching of Arlo Evasick (Port Ludlow, Wash.) in his last collegiate game helped the team hold on for a 7-3 victory over Saint Mary's at Louis Guisto Field.

In the second inning of the second game, Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.) was hit by a pitch to lead off, and Sean Narby (Auburn, Wash.) followed with a single up the middle. Josh Kutz (Seattle, Wash.) launched a home run over the wall in left-center field to give the Redhawks a 3-0 lead. Bryndon Ecklund (Elma, Wash.) reached on a Gael error, and singles by Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.), Cullen Hendrickson (Auburn, Wash.), and Matt Comer (Bozeman, Mont.) led to two more Seattle U runs.

Riley Tompkins (Lynnwood, Wash.) hit a solo home run, his second of the day, in the third inning, and Narby closed out the scoring for the Redhawks with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Narby and Kutz each went 2-for-3 in the game as Seattle U collected nine hits, most of them off Saint Mary's starter Ben Griset.

Evasick earned his fourth victory of the season, allowing six hits, two walks, and three runs, only one of them earned, in six innings with three strikeouts. The game was stopped after the sixth inning in order for Seattle University to head to the airport to catch a flight back home.

Saint Mary's (24-27) jumped on the board in the first inning of the first game as Cole Norton led off with a triple to left-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Fazio. Patrick Wisdom sent a double down the left-field line, and Troy Channing followed with a home run over the wall in left field to extend the Gael advantage to 3-0.

In the second inning, Chris Murphy led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single by Norton, and scored on a single by Wisdom. Seattle U cut the lead in half in the top of the third when Ecklund walked and Oleszczuk hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence.

The Gaels loaded the bases on Redhawk reliever Cam Christian (Auburn, Wash.) with a single by Norton and walks drawn by Wisdom and Channing. Max Whieldon (Trabuco Hills, Calif.) came on in relief and induced a grounder from Donald Collins, but the ball bounced over Hendrickson's head and traveled into left field, scoring two runs and increasing the home team's lead to 6-2.

The Redhawks again cut the Gael lead to two in the sixth inning when Kincaid singled and Tompkins hit a home run over the fence in right-center field. Saint Mary's added an insurance run in the eighth inning, and Patrick Keane pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to save the game.

Evan Ewing (Spokane, Wash.) took the loss after struggling in his second start of the season, lasting only 1 2/3 innings before being lifted after giving up six hits and four runs. Saint Mary's starter Jordan Mills pitched the first four innings, and Martin Agosta pitched the next four to pick up the victory.

Seattle University finishes the 2011 season with a 21-30-1 record, a 10-game improvement from the 2010 campaign. The Redhawks lose Evasick, Josh Kalalau (University Place, Wash.), Conor Spink (Eagle River, Alaska), and Whieldon to graduation, but should return an experienced squad for the 2012 season.
