Seattle University student-athletes participated in their annual “Field Day” Wednesday, May 18. The beautiful spring day brought 22 elementary-aged children from the Rotary Boys and Girls Club to participate with the student-athletes in games, such as kick ball and relays at Logan Field on the SU campus.
The Redhawk student-athletes are no strangers to these children, since each team has volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club regularly throughout the academic year. Field Day is a special opportunity for the children to come onto campus. Through their annual visit to the Seattle U campus, SU hopes the kids take away the importance of receiving a college education in their life goals.
The event was also co-sponsored by the Seattle University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Fifteen student-athletes participated in the Field Day representing different sports, including men’s basketball, softball, and both men’s and women’s: soccer, swimming, tennis and track and field. Service and participation in the community continues to be a critical aspect of being a SU student-athlete.
“The weather was amazing and the kids had a ton of energy,” stated SAAC co-president and men’s soccer student-athlete John Bardwell, “They were really excited to be here and they were a blast to play with.”
SU athletics looks forward to continuing their involvement with the Rotary Boys and Girls Club, as well as other programs in the area.
