Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a single up the middle, and Marcelino Morales (Pasco, Wash.) followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the wall in right field. Singles by Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.), Cullen Hendrickson (Auburn, Wash.), and Riley Tompkins (Lynnwood, Wash.) brought in another run, and Sean Narby (Auburn, Wash.) drove in Hendrickson with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Lewis-Clark State (36-15) broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Kevin Lovelace hit a bases-loaded single that brought in Alfonso Casillas from third base. The bases were still loaded with one out, but Seattle U starter Arlo Evasick (Port Ludlow, Wash.) struck out Aaron DeGuire and Connor Moore to end the Warrior scoring threat.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Redhawk catcher Michael Tevlin (Billings, Mont.) hit a fly ball that sailed just over the wall in right field for his first home run of the season. Lewis-Clark State scored a run in the top of the third when Gino Casini drove in Brian Gaylord with a double to right-center field, but again Evasick worked his way out of the jam without any further damage thanks to two groundouts.
The score remained 5-2 throughout the majority of the game thanks to the pitching on both sides. Evasick finished five innings, allowing five hits, two walks, and two runs with three strikeouts, before giving way to the bullpen, which combined for four innings of relief, giving up only four hits, one walk, and one run. Meanwhile, Warrior relievers Cody Garner and Casey Edelbrock combined for 5 1/3 innings of perfection, setting down 16 Redhawks in a row.
Seattle U broke the game open in the eighth inning off Zach Arneson, as Oleszczuk led off with a walk and came around to score on a triple to right-center field by Kincaid. Josh Kalalau (University Place, Wash.) singled through the drawn-in infield, scoring Kincaid. Pinch runner Bryndon Ecklund (Elma, Wash.) advanced to third on a bad pickoff throw by Arneson and scored on a Tompkins sacrifice fly. Hendrickson, who had walked and advanced to second on the Tompkins flyout, scored on a double to left-center field by Narby.
The victory over Lewis-Clark State snapped a 28-game Warrior winning streak over Seattle U. Seattle U had not defeated Lewis-Clark State since the two teams' first meeting in 1973. The Redhawks also increased their winning streak to three games and unbeaten streak to four games.
Before the game, seniors Evasick, Kalalau, Conor Spink (Eagle River, Alaska), and Max Whieldon (Trabuco Hills, Calif.) were recognized for their contributions to the Seattle U baseball program over the past two seasons.
Seattle University (20-26-1) will look to sweep the two-game set from Lewis-Clark State Wednesday, May 18, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Live stats and live audio for the 2011 home finale will be available on GoSeattleU.com.
