Seattle University scored in both the eighth and ninth innings, but that offense came a little too late as the University of Oregon had established a significant lead on its way to a 10-5 victory Tuesday night at Cheney Stadium.

Oregon (24-23) pounded out 19 hits, 12 of them off Seattle U starting pitcher Max Whieldon (Trabuco Hills, Calif.) in 5 1/3 innings of work. Of the 19 hits, 17 of them were singles, with Kyle Garlick notching the only two extra-base hits for the Ducks as part of a 3-for-5 effort with five runs batted in.

In the top of the second inning, consecutive singles by J.J. Altobelli, Aaron Payne, and Brett Hambright led to the first run of the game, with a groundout scoring Payne later in the inning. Oregon added a run in the fifth inning when Brett Thomas singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by Ryon Healy.

A double by Garlick in the seventh inning scored two more runs, and he highlighted a five-run eighth inning with a bases-clearing triple after four singles for the Ducks. Hambright went 4-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Thomas finished the night 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

With one out in the eighth inning, Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.) reached on an error, and then advanced to second when a Sean Narby (Auburn, Wash.) grounder was misplayed by Duck shortstop Scott McGough. With two outs, Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.) hit his eighth home run of the season over the wall in right field to put the Redhawks on the board.

After one out in the ninth, Nick Latta (Tacoma, Wash.) singled to left field, and Michael Tevlin (Billings, Mont.) followed with a double to left-center field. Pinch hitter Josh Kutz (Seattle, Wash.) sent a seeing-eye single up the middle that scored Latta, and Oleszczuk drove in Tevlin with a single through the left side of the infield. Oregon closer Kellen Moen came on in relief and closed out the game with a strikeout and a groundout.

Oleszczuk reached base all five times he appeared at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk as well as being hit by a pitch and reaching on an error, while Latta went 2-for-4 in the game. Oregon starter Christian Jones earned the victory after throwing 120 pitches in 7 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing two hits, two walks, and one unearned run while striking out seven batters.

Seattle University (18-25) will look to earn a split of the midweek series when it hosts Oregon at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue Wednesday, May 11, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Live stats and live audio of the game will be available on GoSeattleU.com.
