The Seattle University women's golf team ended the first day of the 2011 West Coast Conference Championships in fifth place Monday at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club.
Caitlin McCleary (The Dalles, Ore.) is the leading golfer for the Redhawks after 36 holes, shooting rounds of 78 (+6) and 82 (+10) for a cumulative score of 160 (+16) to finish the day in 17th place. After a team-best 75 (+3) in the first round that had her near the top of the leaderboard, Christine Cook (Yakima, Wash.) struggled in the second round with an 86 (+14) to slide down into a tie for 18th place with a two-round total of 161 (+17).
Nicole Gaddie (Salt Lake City, Utah) was the only Seattle U golfer to improve in the second round, following an 85 (+13) with an 83 (+11) for a 36-hole score of 168 (+24), good enough for a tie for 23rd place. Lori Pearson (Seattle, Wash.) posted scores of 84 (+12) and 85 (+13) for a cumulative score of 169 (+25) to finish the day tied for 25th place. Shannon Quinn (Shoreline, Wash.) is in 28th place after shooting 85 (+13) and 87 (+15) for a two-round total of 172 (+28).
As a team, Seattle University accumulated scores of 322 (+34) and 336 (+48) for a two-round total of 658 (+82), 18 strokes ahead of sixth-place Portland, but far behind Santa Clara in fourth place. Pepperdine holds a comfortable 26-stroke lead over Gonzaga in the team standings, led by individual leader Grace Na, who is one stroke ahead of teammate Danielle Kang.
The third and final round of the 2011 WCC Women's Golf Championships will take place Tuesday, April 19, beginning at 8 a.m. off the 10th tee.
