The Seattle University men's tennis team cruised past NJIT in its morning match, 4-0, but could not take advantage of an early lead against host Longwood, as the Lancers earned a 4-3 victory over the Redhawks Friday afternoon at the National Independent Tournament held at Lancer Courts.

Seattle U jumped out to a quick lead against NJIT (9-12), winning the doubles point thanks to victories by Mark Shkrebtan (Redmond, Wash.) and Simon Meske (Tacoma, Wash.) in the number one doubles position and Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) and Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the number three doubles spot. Shkrebtan, Meske, and Bediones each won their singles matches in straight sets to clinch victory for the Redhawks.

In the afternoon, the same doubles teams won their sets, giving Seattle U the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead over Longwood. Bediones continued his perfect day with a straight-set victory over Edward Becker in the number five singles position (6-3, 6-2), while Zachary Williams (Spokane, Wash.) defeated Hunter Barnes in the number six singles spot, also in straight sets (7-6 (7-3), 6-3)

Longwood (9-7) rallied back thanks to victories in the top four singles positions, three of them in straight sets. Seattle U senior Jordan Prince (Hansville, Wash.) dropped the first set, but won the second set to push his match into a deciding third set before James Davis gave the Lancers the match victory with a three-set win in the number four singles position (7-5, 3-6, 6-3).

Seattle University (4-16) is scheduled to finish play in the National Independent Tournament Saturday, April 16, against North Carolina Central beginning at 8:30 a.m. local time. The match may be moved to an indoor facility in Richmond, Va., in the afternoon if weather causes an issue.
