On Deck: The Redhawks will host their final home series of the 2011 campaign from Friday, Apr. 22 to Saturday, Apr. 23. SU will host Portland State in a four-game series, before concluding the year on the road. Prior to Saturday’s doubleheader, Seattle U will honor the careers of the graduating senior class.
Last Time Out: The Redhawks (7-23 overall, 3-1 PCSC) opened up PCSC action going 3-1 versus Weber State. They swept day one action on Apr. 9, and split results to close out the series on Apr. 10. Freshman pitcher Richelle Ashburn went 2-0 on the weekend, while sophomore Allegra Wilde led the team with seven hits, four runs, two RBIs and a pair of doubles.
Solid PCSC Opener: The Redhawks went 3-1 in their PCSC opener. The Redhawks are currently tied for second place in the Mountain Division with this week’s opponent Utah Valley. Northern Colorado, who went 4-0 in their opening weekend, leads the division.
Klein is Number Nine: Junior third baseman Hannah Klein currently is the team’s leader at the plate, going 25-for-73. Her .342 batting average is currently ranked No. 9 in the PCSC.
Wilde Shines in PCSC Opener: Sophomore Allegra Wilde had a standout PCSC opening weekend, going 7-for-15 and hitting .467. She tallied four runs, two RBIs, two doubles and was 2-for-2 in stolen bases.
Ashburn Goes 2-0: Freshman pitcher Richelle Ashburn went 2-0 versus Weber State in the Redhawks’ PCSC opener. She threw a career-high seven strikeouts in the series opener on Apr. 9, and preserved the SU sweep in game two of the doubleheader. After falling in game one on Apr. 10, Ashburn took over starting pitching duties and helped guide SU to a 5-3 victory. Over the weekend she threw 11 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .277 batting average.
Scouting Utah Valley: The Wolverines of Utah Valley are coming off their conference opening weekend at Portland State. UVU went 3-1 on the weekend against the Vikings, to improve their record to 10-19. Leading the Utah Valley offense is outfielder Meghan Yocom, who in 25 starts is 32-for-79 and is hitting .405. Infielder Amanda Perez is the squad’s home run leader with six, hitting .349 (29-for-83) on the season.
Defensively, Josi Summers leads the Wolverine’s two-player pitching staff with an ERA of 4.18 and a 7-10 record. She’s pitched in 17 games, making 16 starts and throwing 61 strikeouts. Kyli Flanary completes the pitching tandem with a 5.89 ERA and 3-9 record. Both pitchers have posted a shutout on the season.
