Seattle University’s Kelton Sears (Maple Valley, Wash.) was chosen as the Great West Conference Track & Field Male Athlete of the Week for the first week of the awards in the 2011 season.
Sears was chosen for his school record time of 8:33.17 in the 3000 meter run at the Oregon Preview on March 19 in Eugene, Ore. His time passed the old record of 8:44.86 by more than 11 seconds.
“It speaks volumes that Kelton earned this honor in an event that isn’t his focus event,” said head coach Trisha Steidl. “His versatility, coachability, and commitment to his goals have taken him far. He’s a competitor at heart and the best is yet to come from him this season.”
Other nominees were South Dakota’s Jeremy Blount, Texas-Pan American’s Jameson Strachan, and Utah Valley’s Tim Rowberry.
This is the Redhawks’ second year competing in the Great West Conference. Sears and the rest of the team will next compete at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore. on April 1-2.
