The Seattle University softball team (1-11) will remain on the road this weekend, traveling to Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Tournament. The Redhawks will take on Boise State and Southern Utah at the two-day tournament from Saturday, Mar. 5 to Sunday, Mar. 6.

Last Time Out: The Redhawks earned their first win of the 2011 campaign at the University of San Diego on Feb. 27, 4-3 in 10 innings. Freshman Sarah Petosa’s (Auburn, Wash.) two out RBI double and a Jessica Ulrich (Lewiston, Idaho) home run, in addition to solid pitching from Ulrich helped guide the Redhawks to victory. Freshman Kelli Demianew (Pendleton, Ore.) not only scored the game-winning run, but also pitched three relief innings to earn her first career victory.

Seattle U ended up splitting the series with the Toreros, as they dropped a 2-0 decision in the second game of the doubleheader.

On Deck: The Redhawks will play their first games of the 2011 season in the city of Seattle; however it will be at the Husky Softball Stadium on the campus of the University of Washington. SU will take on Oregon State, Portland State, USC Upstate and Washington at the three-day tournament from Mar. 11-13.

Ulrich Named Featured Student-Athlete of the Week: Sophomore Jessica Ulrich (Lewiston, Idaho) was named GoSeattleU.com’s Featured Student-Athlete of the Week after a standout performance at USD on Feb. 27. In addition to playing a great defensive game in the circle, she was 2-for-5 with a clutch home run to help SU snap their 10-game losing skid.

Freshmen Making Their Mark: Freshmen Kelli Demianew (Pendleton, Ore.) and Sarah Petosa (Auburn, Wash.) both had a solid outing this past weekend at San Diego. Demainew pitched three relief innings to help guide SU to their first win of the season, while Petosa hit an RBI double to shift the momentum to the Redhawks in the second inning of SU’s 4-3 10-inning win.

 Scouting Boise State: The Broncos of Boise State enter this weekend’s tournament riding a 4-8 record. After dropping three straight, they have put together a pair of victories in their last two outings. They are most recently coming off an 8-4 win over Cal State Northridge, 8-4, on Feb. 27.

Kellie Caplan leads the Bronco offense, behind a .395 batting average. She is 17-for-43 in 12 consecutive starts and has tallied six runs, five RBIs and a double. Four BSU players are hitting above .300 thus far this season.

Defensively, Allie Crump leads the four player pitching staff with a 4-3 record in the circle. She’s thrown four complete games in 38.1 innings. She’s allowed 51 hits, 33 earned runs and 26 walks.

Scouting Southern Utah: The Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 3-9, travel to Boise after falling in their last three games. They most recently fell twice on Feb. 22, seeing a 10-1 loss to Tennessee, and dropped a 4-3 decision to UNLV.

Leading SUU on the rubber is Heather Black, the only pitcher with a win under her belt. Southern Utah has four different players making up their pitching rotation. Black has a 3-4 record, including a pair of shutouts. In 39.0 innings pitched, she’s allowed 38 hits, 21 earned runs and 14 walks. Black has also thrown 23 strikeouts.

Offensively, Heather Richardson leads the Thunderbirds at the plate. She is 11-for-36 in 12 consecutive starts. She posts a .306 batting average, and has hit four RBIs, two runs, a double and a home run this season.
