In a pitcher's duel to start the 2011 season, the Cal State Northridge Matadors were able to push across a couple of runs while holding Seattle University off the scoreboard for a 2-0 victory Friday afternoon at Matador Field.

Cal State Northridge (1-0) broke through in the bottom of the third inning, as Kyle Attl earned a one-out triple to right field and scored on a single down the right field line by TS Reed. The Matadors added to the lead in the fifth inning as Tommy Simis led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Attl, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Reed.

Matador starter Justen Gorski pitched the first seven innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters. After Josh Goossen-Brown pitched a scoreless eighth inning, closer Ryan Juarez hit the mound in the ninth inning, allowing a one-out double to pinch hitter Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.) to bring the tying run to the plate. Juarez pitched out of the jam to earn the save.

Seattle U starter Max Whieldon (Trabuco Hills, Calif.) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing just five hits and two runs with one walk and one strikeout. He hit three batters with pitches in the seventh inning to load the bases with two outs, but reliever Conor Spink (Eagle River, Alaska) was able to induce an inning-ending groundout to keep the Redhawks in the game.

Shortstop Nick Latta (Tacoma, Wash.) reached base twice during the game with a single and a walk plus earned a stolen base. Michael Tevlin (Billings, Mont.) received the start at catcher and laced a double down the left field line in the seventh inning.

Seattle University (0-1) will look to break into the win column Saturday, Feb. 19, as it faces Cal State Northridge in a scheduled doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
