The Seattle University athletics department will honor SU Hall of Famer Tom Workman by retiring the number 32, his jersey number during his collegiate career, during a ceremony to take place at halftime of the men's basketball game between Seattle University and the University of Portland Saturday, Feb. 5, at KeyArena at Seattle Center.

Workman came to Seattle University from Seattle's Bishop Blanchet High School in 1963 and joined the varsity basketball team in 1964, averaging 15.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game during the 1964-65 season. He helped Seattle U post a 19-7 record, including an 11-game winning streak that featured two victories over Idaho as well as wins at Portland and at Nevada.

In the 1965-66 campaign, Workman averaged 22.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and 76.7 percent from the free throw line. He scored 23 points, including the game-winning basket, in Seattle U's 74-72 victory over Texas Western that capped a 16-10 season and handed the Miners their only loss on their way to the 1966 NCAA championship.

In the 1966-67 season, Workman joined UCLA's Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) as the only two UPI All-West Coast First Team unanimous selections. He averaged 20.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game as Seattle University won 10 of its first 11 games on its way to a berth in the 1967 NCAA Tournament and an 18-8 overall record.

The 6-7 post player finished his Seattle U career with 1,497 points and 657 rebounds, currently 11th on the school's all-time scoring list and 14th on the career rebounding list. Workman was drafted in the first round of the 1967 NBA Draft by the St. Louis Hawks and played for the Hawks, Baltimore Bullets, and Detroit Pistons in the NBA as well as for the Los Angeles/Utah Stars and Denver Rockets in the ABA.

Workman becomes the sixth Seattle University men's basketball player to have his number retired, joining Elgin Baylor (#22), Eddie Miles (#20), Ed O'Brien (#3), John O'Brien (#4), and Clint Richardson (#44). After the 2010-11 season, no member of the Seattle U men's basketball team will wear #32.

The Feb. 5 game against the Portland Pilots is the next home game for Seattle University and is set for a 7:10 p.m. tip-off. For tickets to the game, including the halftime ceremony honoring Workman, go online to Ticketmaster.com, visit your local Fred Meyer location, or stop by the KeyArena box office during normal business hours.
