"I thought the guys played hard," said head coach Brad Agoos. "Unfortunately, we played well between the 18's and didn't do enough in the box."
In the first half, the Redhawks quickly took possession behind a series of corner kicks and shots. Despite tallying five shots in the first 16 minutes, the Pioneer defense was able to hold off the SU attack. Following their early attack, both sides traded off possession until Denver found an offensive opening. In the 28th minute, Mark Weigand sent in a corner kick that Jarod Stigall was able to shoot in to the near post to give DU a 1-0 advantage that they carried into halftime.
In the second half, freshman Brady Ballew (Marysville, Wash.) came in off the bench and was a spark plug up top. He worked to push the ball deep into the Denver half and made a series of solid runs. Ballew looked to even the score, when he received the ball inside the DU box. He slammed in a shot that went just wide and deflected off the post.
Following their missed opportunity, the Pioneers sent the ball into the SU end of the field. At the 70:58 minute mark, Michael Perry sent in a cross to Kellan Christensen, who added a second Denver goal. The Redhawks worked to rebound from their two goal deficit, but they were unable to find a clear opening to get the ball into the back of the net.
Seattle U will conclude the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 7, at CSU Bakersfield. First kick is set for 1:30 p.m.
