"I think it is great sign for the future," said head coach Julie Woodward about Wallis' goal. "She is an unbelievable person and a great player. I think she is going to be someone who is going to contribute to our program a lot in the future."
"I am also very happy to give the seniors a win in the last game of their career on their home field. I thought we played well, showed a lot of character and had fun, which sums up our season in general," concluded Woodward.
Senior Liz Homer (Richland, Wash.) made her first career start in goal in the game. In 45 minutes of first half action she helped direct the Seattle U backline. Behind Homer's guidance, SU held off the CSUB offense scoreless and to only one shot.
On the other end of the field, Seattle U's offensive attack sent in seven shots. The Redhawks controlled the ball for much of the period and established the tempo of the game. Despite controlling the ball for a majority of the half, SU was unable to get on the board and went into halftime scoreless.
In the second period, SU's attack on the Roadrunner goal became much more aggressive. The Redhawks pushed the ball into deep into the Bakersfield half of the field. Despite their fervor of attempts, CSUB goalkeeper Kym Gause and the Roadrunner defense was able to deflect off SU's initial shot attempts.
In the 80th minute, Seattle U took the ball into the CSUB box. Julia Besagno (Maple Valley, Wash.) fired off a shot that Gause was able to knock out of the box, but was not able to control. Wallis followed through on a series of deflections from the Bakersfield defenders to slam in her first career goal, which proved to be the difference maker in the contest.
In the game, SU outshot CSUB 13-1. Goalkeepers Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.), who played the entire second half, and Homer each earned the shutout in the game.
Seattle U, who currently competes as an NCAA Division I Independent team, concludes the season with an 11-6-2 overall record.
