Seattle University student-athletes continue to post exemplary scores when it comes to academic performance, combining for a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 95 percent in the 2010 NCAA Graduation Rates Report, released Wednesday by the national organization.

As a whole, 95 percent of Seattle University student-athletes who entered the school in the 2003-04 academic year received their degrees, as compared to 73 percent of all Seattle University students who started at the school in that year. Seattle University's rate was also higher than the national GSR of 79 percent for all student-athletes who began college in the 2003-04 academic year.

"This is terrific news," Bill Hogan, Director of Athletics, said. "To have an outstanding graduation rate is a tribute to the coaches and student-athletes, and most importantly, to the professors who created the learning environment that led to this success."

The four-class GSR average, those who started studies at Seattle University between 2000-01 and 2003-04, was 83 percent, once again higher than the Graduation Success Rate of 71 percent for all Seattle University students and the GSR of 79 percent for all student-athletes nationwide entering school during those four years.

The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The rate holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The Graduation Success Rate also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
