"I give a lot of credit to Washington, they are a very good team," said head coach Brad Agoos. "They were able to take advantage of a couple opportunities to get the win tonight. They are a solid team, so we will need to come away from this, work hard and go back out there and compete."
The Huskies got off a shot seconds into the competition, but the Redhawks were able to clear it out. Brandon Hamer (Carmichael, Calif.) swiftly moved the ball up and blasted the ball into the Husky half, but the Redhawks were unable to capitalize on the offensive shift. From that point forward possession transferred between sides, before Washington took the ball into the Seattle U half.
The Huskies then took a corner which goalkeeper Ivan Dizdar (Croatia) was easily able to punch out of the box. The Redhawks pushed the ball to the Washington half of the field, setting up a Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) corner kick. After a quick back-and-forth pass with Kyle Peterman (Boise, Idaho), Morris sent in a cross that was just over the head of a reaching Brady Ballew (Marysville, Wash.).
The Huskies regained possession following the Redhawk offensive opportunity. UW pushed the ball into the SU half of the field and were able to capitalize on the opportunity. Washington took a corner kick that Nico De la Cruz (Port Orchard, Wash.) received and tried to clear out. The Husky's Casey McCool was able to intercept the defensive deflection to shoot in the go-ahead goal in the 22nd minute.
Seattle U had six corner kick opportunities in the first half, but the Redhawks were unable to capitalize on their possession opportunity. They got off five shots in the period, with Morris being credited with the only shot on target.
Defensively, goalkeeper Dizdar orchestrated the defense to prevent UW getting on the board again in the half. He had a save and punched out three of the Huskies corner kicks to help control the ball.
In the second half, the Redhawks best scoring opportunity came off a Morris pass to an oncoming Troy Bratten (Gresham, Ore.). Morris passed off the ball from 25 yards out to a charging Bratten, but his shot had a little too much lift on it and went just above the crossbar.
Minutes later, Washington's McCool scored his second goal of the game receiving a ball in traffic and shooting it to the far post in the 61st minute.
Seattle U worked to bring the ball into the Husky box, but scoring attempts were cleared out by the Washington backline. SU had 11 shots in the game, with a pair on goal. Morris led the team with three shots and was credited with both shots on net.
Goalkeeper Dizdar had eight saves in the contest, as Washington tallied 19 shots, with 10 on target.
The Redhawks will face the University of Portland (3-1-2) to close out the Husky Fever Classic. The contest will be played at Championship Field on the Seattle U campus on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m. The Pilots defeated UC Davis 2-1 in overtime to open up the tournament.
