In the 12th minute, Seattle U went on the attack, as Ed Walugembe (Kampala, Uganda) took the first shot of the flurry. Peterman corralled the blocked shot and made an attempt of his own that was turned away by Michigan goalie Chris Blais, but the junior was able to keep possession and bang in the rebound for his second goal in as many matches.
The action went back-and-forth as the Wolverines tried to tie the match, while the Redhawks were looking for more offense. In the 41st minute, a Seattle U pass deflected off a Michigan defender onto the foot of Kosaka, whose shot clipped off another Wolverine player and found the lower left corner of the net for his first tally of the season.
Michigan (2-1-1) turned up the pressure in the second half, attempting 20 shots in the period. A foul by Seattle U in the 76th minute put the ball just outside the box, and while the two teams were jostling for position, Hamoody Saad quickly sent a grounder past the wall and the rest of the Redhawk defense into the net for his second goal of the season.
The Wolverines kept the Seattle U defense on its heels, continually peppering the Redhawk net with shots that were sailing just wide. In the 86th minute, Matt Schmitt sent a crossing pass to Soony Saad, whose shot found the upper right corner of the net, tying the match at 2-2 and eventually sending the contest into overtime.
Near the end of the first overtime period, Michigan saw its best chance of victory, as Justin Meram's shot was blocked and Soony Saad's follow hit the crossbar. Seattle University's best chance at the win came late in the second overtime session, as Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) corralled a thru ball and blasted a shot on net, but Blais was up to the task, making the save to preserve the tie.
"I am proud of the guys today. Michigan is one of the top teams in the country, and we were just a hair away from being able to pick up the victory. This match was a big step for us as we proceed this season," head coach Brad Agoos said.
Soony Saad led all players with ten shots, including three shots on goal, while Meram and Hamoody Saad each finished with eight total shots. Walugembe led the Redhawks with seven shots, while three of Morris' six shots were on goal.
Seattle U goalie Ivan Dizdar (Croatia) collected nine saves during the 110 minutes of action, while Blais, playing in front of his family and friends as he returned to his hometown, picked up seven saves during the contest.
Morris, Peterman, and Brandon Hamer (Carmichael, Calif.) represent Seattle U on the all-tournament team, while Michigan is represented by Meram, Adam Shaw, and Alex Wood. Gonzaga, which defeated UIC 1-0 in Sunday's early match, is represented on the all-tournament team by Stefan Eysteinsson, Nick Love, Philippe Garre, and Ryan Caballero, while UIC's Joe Radice and Robert Younger earned the honor as well.
Seattle University (0-3-1) will head to Corvallis, Ore., next weekend for the Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic. The Redhawks will face Central Arkansas Friday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m., followed by a contest against UC Davis Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1:30 p.m.
