Seattle University women's soccer newcomer Monique Escalera (Westminster, Calif.) can add another bullet to her resume - national champion. The incoming freshman helped guide her club team the Laguna Hills Eclipse to a 1-0 victory over the Illinois-based squad and defending national champions the Eclipse Select 91/92 on July 25th, at the Girls Under-18 National Championship.

"I think winning is contagious," said veteran Redhawk head coach Julie Woodward. "For her to be part of such a successful team and winning a national championship coming into her first collegiate season is going to be an extra added benefit for the team."

"I think she is going to come in confident and the experience that she gained at the national tournament is going to be helpful to us as a program when she steps in. I think she is going to add a lot to our team and I am excited for her to be here," concluded Woodward.

Escalera is one of nine newcomers joining the Seattle U women's soccer team this fall. Woodward will look to her to compete for time on the backline, alongside veteran returning players. The Redhawks will kick off 2010 with the crosstown Huskies of the University of Washington on Friday, Aug. 20, in a 5 p.m. match at Championship Field on the SU campus.
