All the action in game one took place in the first three innings, beginning in the top of the first when Brandi Campos and Brandi Scoggins led off with back-to-back singles and Becca Diede was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Campos was forced out at home for the first out, De'Chauna Skinner walked to force in Scoggins, and Arielle Wiser drove in Diede with a single to right-center field. Seattle U stopped the rally by completing a double play to end the inning.
The Vikings added a run in the second inning as Alyssa Roblez reached on an error, stole second base, and scored on a single by Scoggins. The Redhawks came back in the bottom of the second, starting with a walk drawn by Sandra Hernandez (Redlands, Calif.) and a single by Megan MacIsaac (Santa Barbara, Calif.). Both runners advanced one base on a passed ball, and Hernandez would score on a single by Allegra Wilde (Kennewick, Wash.).
After a strikeout, Jessica Amador (Whittier, Calif.) would tie the game with a double to left-center field that scored MacIsaac and Wilde. A single to left field by Katie Antich (Spokane, Wash.) put runners on first and third with one out and led to a pitching change for Portland State. Anna Bertrand came on and retired the next two batters to end the Seattle U rally and keep the score tied at 3-3.
Portland State (29-25, 18-2 PCSC) would take the lead for good in the top of the third, scoring three times thanks in part to two errors by the Seattle U defense. Bertrand did the rest of the work for the Vikings, scattering four hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings of work while striking out nine batters in earning her 15th win of the season.
Jessica Ulrich (Lewiston, Idaho) took the loss for Seattle U, but settled down in the final four innings, allowing only four hits after the third inning. MacIsaac went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, while Antich and Katie Gould (Medford, Ore.) also earned two hits apiece during the game.
Seattle University struck first in the second game, as Wilde and Antich notched back-to-back singles, followed by a triple by Gould that scored both runners. The Redhawks had a chance to increase the lead when MacIsaac drew a walk to put runners on first and third with one out, but a short flyout and a strikeout ended the scoring chance.
After earning only three hits in the first four innings, Portland State got to Seattle U starter Kelsey Reynolds (Kent, Wash.) in the fifth inning, as Roblez led off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single up the middle by Diede. Lacey Holm drew a walk, and Skinner followed with a home run to left field, her fifth of the season, that cleared the bases and gave the Vikings a 4-2 lead.
The Redhawks cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth, as a single down the right field line by MacIsaac scored Antich. A walk drawn by Ulrich loaded the bases with one out, but a strikeout and a lineout prevented the rally from going any further. A two-out, two-run double by Diede in the sixth inning, followed by an RBI double by Holm, gave the Vikings a cushion and ended Reynolds' day in the circle.
Seattle U had one final chance to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, as Hannah Klein (Camarillo, Calif.) and Wilde reached on singles, and Antich followed with a single to left field, but Klein was thrown out by Sadie Lopez attempting to score. Katie Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached on an error that loaded the bases, but MacIsaac hit a ball right at Lopez to end the scoring opportunity.
Tori Rogers picked up the victory, allowing nine hits, three walks, and three runs with eight strikeouts during the complete game effort. Diede led the Vikings offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, while Scoggins and Wiser picked up two hits apiece in the victory.
In her final collegiate pitching appearance, Reynolds took the loss after giving up 10 hits, three walks, and seven runs, four of them earned, in 5 2/3 innings of work. Antich, one of five seniors playing in their final game for Seattle University, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Gould and Wilde each posted 2-for-2 performances at the plate.
Seattle University concludes the 2010 season with a 16-32-1 overall record, including an 11-9 record in its first season as a member of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. The Redhawks finished in third place in the PCSC Mountain Division behind Portland State (18-2) and Utah Valley (13-7). Besides Reynolds and Antich, Sunday was the final collegiate action for Hernandez, MacIsaac, and Petersen.
