The Seattle University women's tennis team had its chances, but Eastern Washington University was able to win the key matches on its way to a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the Thorpe Fieldhouse.
Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) was the only SeattleU player to win in both singles and doubles, first teaming with Mikaela Peterson (Spokane, Wash.) to defeat Chelsea Patton and Ryan Warner, 9-7. Schwab then came from behind to defeat Marie Demerath in the number two singles position in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-2).
Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.) earned a straight-set victory over Patton in the number four singles position (6-3, 6-3), while Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) also won her match in straight sets, defeating Judy Liening in the number five singles slot (6-3, 6-1).
Eastern Washington (10-8) picked up the doubles point with victories in the number one and number two doubles sets. In number one singles, Caitlin Bampton was able to push past Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) thanks to victories in both tiebreakers (7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6)). Straight-set victories by Kelsey Knight and Ryann Warner clinched the Eagles' second 4-3 victory over the Redhawks this year.
Seattle University (7-10) will prepare for the National Independent Tournament, hosted by Longwood University in Farmville, Va., April 15-18.
