Riley Tompkins (Lynnwood, Wash.), Nick Latta (Tacoma, Wash.), and Steve Kirbach (Kirkland, Wash.), the 7-8-9 hitters in the lineup, combined to hit 6-for-11 with five runs scored and four runs driven in. Tompkins started the offense in the second inning with a solo home run to right field, his team-leading fourth long ball of the season. After Latta walked on four pitches, Kirbach hit a double into the right-center field gap that scored Latta.
In the top of the fourth inning, Ryan Behmanesh cut the Redhawk lead in half with a solo home run off the scoreboard in left field, but back-to-back doubles by Latta and Kirbach in the bottom of the inning brought the lead back to two runs.
Seattle U extended its lead in the sixth inning off Patriot reliever Aaron Gilbreath as Nate Roberts (Silverdale, Wash.) reached on an error and advanced to second on a balk. Josh Kalalau (University Place, Wash.) drove in Roberts with a single, and back-to-back singles by Tompkins and Latta loaded the bases.
Kirbach drove in his third run of the game on a groundout that scored Kalalau. With two outs, Bryndon Ecklund (Elma, Wash.) was hit by a pitch, and Cullen Hendrickson (Auburn, Wash.) followed with a single to right field that scored Tompkins and Latta to give the Redhawks a 7-1 advantage.
Max Whieldon (Trabuco Hills, Calif.) started the game for Seattle U, pitching into the eighth inning before giving up a single to Travis Meiners, a double to Austin Elkins, and a sacrifice fly to Tyler Robbins. Conor Spink (Eagle River, Alaska) gave up an RBI single to Jason Krizan and hit Ryan Enos with a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out.
Arlo Evasick (Port Ludlow, Wash.) replaced Spink and force Behmanesh to fly out. A single by Duncan McAlpine should have just loaded the bases, but a bobble by Kalalau in right field allowed Krizan to score. Austin Knight's grounder to Latta was misplayed, allowing Enos to score to bring Dallas Baptist within two, but Evasick closed out the inning by inducing a flyout from Josh Wilson.
Evasick finished the game while allowing only one hit in the ninth inning, earning his first save of the season. Whieldon picked up his second win of the year after allowing seven hits and three runs in 7 1/3 innings of work with no walks and four strikeouts. Dallas Baptist starter Will Lane took the loss, giving up five hits and three runs with one walk and four strikeouts in five innings of work
Dallas Baptist (21-16) finished with ten hits, led by a 3-for-5 day by Krizan and two-hit performances from Elkins, Behmanesh, and McAlpine. Jared Stafford pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the Patriots, setting down all seven Redhawk batters he faced, including two strikeouts.
Seattle University (5-26) will have a chance to clinch its first weekend series win of the season Friday, April 24, as the Redhawks send Brandon Kizer (Marysville, Wash.) to the mound against Ryan Millard of the Patriots. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with live stats and live audio available on GoSeattleU.com.
