It took just one inning for Pacific Lutheran to earn all the offense it needed, as the Seattle University baseball team was unable to take advantage of control issues by the Lute starting pitcher in Thursday's 6-0 loss at Bannerwood Park.

Pacific Lutheran (20-6) did its damage with two outs in the seventh inning, beginning with a single by Corey Moore. After Cody Goodfellow (Tacoma, Wash.) came on in relief of Max Whieldon (Trabuco Hills, Calif.) and the teams sat through a six-minute delay due to hail, pinch hitter Carl Benton walked, and Ben Shively followed with a double to left-center field that cleared the bases.

Brian Shannon (Olympia, Wash.) came on in relief and promptly issued back-to-back walks to Jaron Iwakami and Sammy Davis to load the bases. Josh Takayoshi's single up the middle drove in Shively and Iwakami, and Dan Johansen followed with a single that once again loaded the bases for the Lutes. Conor Spink (Eagle River, Alaska) came on to end the inning, but not before Ryan Aratani sent a single down the left field line to score Davis and Takayoshi.

Paul DiPietro pitched seven innings as the Lute starter, giving up three hits and six walks while striking out five batters. He scattered the Redhawk baserunners as no SeattleU player advanced past second base, and he was able to leave eight runners stranded on the bases to pick up his third win of the season.

Whieldon took the loss despite giving up just five hits, one walk, and one run in 6 2/3 innings of work in his first start of the season. Riley Tompkins (Lynnwood, Wash.) went 1-for-2 with two walks, while Doug Buser (Orinda, Calif.) drew three walks during the game. Aratani went 3-for-4 for the Lutes, with Johansen contributing a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.

Seattle University (3-22) ends its week of home games Friday, April 9, against Concordia University beginning at 4 p.m. at Bannerwood Park. After a trip to Wenatchee to face Washington State next Tuesday, April 13, the team will begin a ten-game homestand with a three-game series against Nevada April 16-18.
