"It was nice to get back in the win column and earn our first win at home this season," said head coach Dan Powers. "It was nice to see people's bats start to get more active and we are putting it together at the plate. Katie Antich and Katie Gould both had a solid day at the plate for us."
Game 2
W • 7-5
Reynolds came into the game in place of a struggling Jessica Ulrich, down 4-1, following a first inning run scored by Antich. After scoring a pair of runs in both the first and second innings, Ulrich took over designated player duties, while Reynolds took the mound. Despite struggling early, SeattleU was able to remain composed and came back versus the Coyotes to earn the 7-5 victory.
In the bottom of the third the Redhawks evened the score 4-4. Antich led off the inning with a single to third base. Gould followed, reaching on an error by the first baseman to advance Antich to third. With Ulrich at the plate, Gould stole second and Antich came home on an error by the catcher. Both Ulrich and the following batter Megan MacIssac were both walked to load the bases for Theresa Clark. The SeattleU second baseman singled down the left field line to send home Gould and Ulrich, and even the game.
The following inning, South Dakota managed to take the lead again behind a double to left field from Alexa Rudeen. Strong defense from the Redhawks got SU out of the inning without allowing the Coyotes to break onto the board with additional runs.
After giving up their short lived third inning lead, SeattleU got back out on top in the bottom half of the fourth. This time their lead would be for good. Katie Peterson led off the inning with a single to left field and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kate Zender. With a runner on second, Antich singled to third to have runners on the corners. Gould came to the plate and grounded out to the pitcher, only after Antich stole second. With two outs and runners at second and third, Ulrich doubled to right center to score both Peterson and Antich. MacIssac followed, reaching on an error to second base. She then attempted to advance to second base, but was called out. During MacIssac's attempt at second, Ulrich came home to close out SU's three run inning.
In 22 batters faced in 5.2 innings pitched, Reynolds threw three strikeouts and allowed only one run to earn her second win of the season.
Game 1
L • 2-1
After a long fought battle, the Redhawk defense faltered in the top of the seventh to hand South Dakota a 2-1 victory. The Coyotes took an early one run lead in the top of the first, which dictated the scoring rhythm of the game.
Following their early lead, SeattleU evened the score in the bottom half of the third. With an out, Sandra Hernandez doubled down the right field line. Two batters later, Hernandez was sent home on a double to right center from Gould. The Redhawk offense was unable to garner more offensive momentum to continue the inning.
The SU defense prevented USD from getting on the board again until the seventh inning, when Rudeen grounded out to shortstop to send home Lexi Eversley for the game-winning run.
The Redhawks return to action on Friday, Apr. 2, with a 1 p.m. contest versus South Dakota. Due to inclement weather conditions, game time is subject to change. All changes will be posted on www.GoSeattleU.com as soon as they are confirmed.
