On a sunny day at the SeattleU Tennis Courts, the Seattle University women’s tennis team blazed by Pacific University (Ore.) 9-0. The Redhawks had an all-around solid performance in Saturday’s victory, as they saw wins up and down the lineup. After earning the doubles points, with wins in all three matches, they went on to earn all six singles victories to sweep the Boxers on the day.
In doubles, the No. 1 pair of Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.) and Audree Jenks (Albuquerque, N.M.) did face a battle in the Boxer’s Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto. The PU partners took the match to a tiebreaker, which the Redhawk tandem came out on the winning end 8-7 (8-6).
Following the opening doubles match that was a battle to the wire, the No. 2 team of Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) and Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) breezed by Pacific’s Dayna Wong and Rachel Mizuno, for an 8-0 victory. Similarly, the No. 3 pair of Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) and Mikaela Peterson (Spokane, Wash.) earned an 8-1 win over the Boxer’s Stephanie Velligas and Michelle Soga.
After taking the doubles points, 3-0, SeattleU went into singles action behind confident well-rounded play. Finishing their matches first and adding to the early Redhawk lead were Jenks and Cheng at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. Jenks breezed by Wong in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and Cheng dominated her match versus Mizuno with her own straight set win, 6-0, 6-0.
At the No. 1 singles position, Ohno had a tough outing versus Pacific’s Goya. After winning the first set 6-4, Goya took the second 6-3 to send the match into a third set. A composed Ohno was able to come out on top with a 10-5 win to remain perfect on the day.
Following, at the No. 2 position was sophomore Schwab who defeated Yoshimoto 6-2, 6-3. For SeattleU at the No. 5 spot was Mortera who took on Velligas. She was able to get by the Boxer player easily to earn a 6-1, 6-0 win. Both Schwab and Mortera were dual winners on the day.
Rounding out the SU lineup was Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) who squared off with Pacific’s Dawn Greene. Sugimoto kept the Redhawks perfect on the day with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Green and conclude a great day of SeattleU tennis action.
The Redhawks will return to action on Friday, April 2 in Lewiston, Idaho. SU will square off with Lewis-Clark State in a 1 p.m. match.
