For the second consecutive year, Seattle University has been selected to host the day-long Team Captain’s Leadership Camp, an intensive and interactive sports leadership camp for aspiring and actual leaders of all sports, to be held at the Student Center on campus Saturday, May 15.
Arranged by Seattle University head volleyball coach Shannon Ellis, the camp is run by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center, which conducts comprehensive Leadership Academies with several of the nation’s top athletic departments such as North Carolina, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Michigan, and Yale.
“Jeff Janssen is a gifted speaker and everyone who attends this training will leave with renewed confidence and energy,” Ellis said.
This year there is a special two-hour session for coaches and athletic directors which will run from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This workshop is intended to show coaches and administrators how to best develop, select, and partner with emerging and existing leaders to create a strong leadership team. The cost of the session is $65 before April 1 and $115 after April 1.
The student-athlete Leadership Camp, set to run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., teaches high school sophomores through college seniors the leadership insights and skills needed to be a highly effective and respected leader of their teams. The camp is limited to 100 participants, with an early registration fee of $125 if completed by April 1 and a still-discounted fee of $175 after April 1, depending on space. If a school registers 10 or more students at one time by April 1, the cost is $100 per person.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for athletes in the Puget Sound region,” said Ellis. “This is a way to improve on those intangibles that are essential to success.”
The registration fee includes the training session on May 15, six months of ongoing leadership development and support online through the Team Captains Network (www.teamcaptainsnetwork.com), a copy of Janssen’s book The Team Captain’s Leadership Manual, and a Captain’s Camp T-shirt.
“I have seen for myself the difference that having skilled leaders can have on a team over the course of a season. Leadership can be taught and it can be improved. Athletes who want to be their best and lead their teams to excellence will learn how in this camp. I’m definitely sending my captains,” Ellis said.
