In its 2010 home opener, the Seattle University softball team was unable to take advantage of numerous scoring opportunities, stranding 13 runners on base as the University of Miami was able to break through for a run in the 10th inning and hold on for a 1-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Logan Field.

As darkness started to descend, Shannon Tillett led off the top of the 10th inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Daniela Torres. Jenna McGivney sent a single up the middle, and Tillett was able to come around and score Miami's only run of the game.

With one out in the bottom of the tenth, Lauren Berin (Lacey, Wash.) reached base on Miami's fourth error of the afternoon and advanced to second on a single by Jessica Amador (Whittier, Calif.). After relief pitcher Jessica Simpson earned a strikeout for the second out, Megan MacIsaac (Santa Barbara, Calif.) singled to left field to load the bases. Sandra Hernandez (Redlands, Calif.) hit a hard groundball to the right side, but Meghan Mawn was able to range to her left, snag the grounder, and make the throw to first base for the final out of the contest.

SeattleU had a chance to end the game in the ninth inning, as Katie Gould (Medford, Ore.) reached on an infield single, and Simpson's throw to second base on an attempted sacrifice by Allegra Wilde (Kennewick, Wash.) sailed wide. However, Wilde strayed too far away from first base and was doubled off on a lineout to Mawn by Katie Antich (Spokane, Wash.), ending the rally.

Miami (6-7) threatened to break through in the eighth inning, as McGivney and Ashley Zappia picked up singles and eventually reached third and second, respectively, with two outs. Jordan McElroy hit a liner that seemed destined for right field, but Hernandez used every inch of her body and leap to make the catch and keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Antich singled to right-center field, and Rose Harrington followed with a single through the right side. Simpson was brought in to replace Miami starter Meredith Linch, and she was able to force extra innings with a Berin ground ball to Sarah Billstrom, who threw it to Torres to force Antich at third base.

Before giving up the three straight hits in the tenth inning, SeattleU starter Hannah Klein (Camarillo, Calif.) had been solid, allowing only four hits in the first nine innings with no walks and five strikeouts. Simpson was credited with the win for Miami, giving up three hits and striking out three batters in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Antich was the only SeattleU player with more than one hit, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate. McGivney went 2-for-4 for Miami, which had asked for this game to help make up for seven lost contests at the beginning of the year due to the cancellation of the Middle Tennessee Invitational as well as a doubleheader against Morehead State.

Seattle University (1-14) will head across town for the Husky Softball Classic this weekend, beginning its participation with a rematch against Miami Saturday, March 13, at 1 p.m. at Husky Softball Stadium. SeattleU will have another rematch at 6 p.m., once again facing top-ranked Washington one week after losing to the Huskies twice at the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational. Sunday, SeattleU will face conference rival Portland State at 10:30 a.m., followed by its fourth game of the year against Washington at 1 p.m.
