The Seattle University softball team could not get its offense going during Sunday's bracket play, losing to Washington, 11-2, and East Carolina, 2-0, to finish in fourth place at the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

During the third place game against East Carolina, SeattleU earned only three hits against Pirate pitcher Faith Sutton. After going down in order the first time through the lineup, the Redhawks picked up their first hit when Katie Antich (Spokane, Wash.) led off the fourth inning with a double to right-center field. Antich advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Sutton struck out the side to strand Antich in scoring position.

Hannah Klein (Camarillo, Calif.) led off the fifth inning with a single, and pinch runner Rose Harrington (Missoula, Mont.) stole second base, but again Sutton preserved the shutout with a strikeout and a flyout. SeattleU's final chance came in the seventh inning when Sandra Hernandez (Redlands, Calif.) reached on an error and Jessica Ulrich (Lewiston, Idaho) singled to right field, but a groundout ended the Redhawks' chances.

East Carolina (8-10) would receive all the offense it needed in the first inning when Charina Sumner led off with a single and advanced to third base on a single by Christina Merrida. Sumner and Merrida successfully executed a double steal, with Sumner stealing home for the run. The Pirates added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Vanessa Moreno walked, advanced to second on a single by Cristen Aona, and scored on a single by Kaui Tom.

Sutton struck out eight Redhawks in pitching a complete game, while Klein gave up only five hits and two runs in six innings of work for SeattleU. This was the closest game of the weekend for Seattle University, as the previous four Redhawk games during the tournament ended in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

In the semifinal contest against top-ranked Washington, SeattleU gave up seven runs in the first inning, with the big hit being a three-run home run by Morgan Stuart. The Huskies also picked up back-to-back doubles by Jerrin Fa'asua and Bailey Stenson during the opening frame.

SeattleU cut into the lead in the top of the second inning as Lauren Berin (Lacey, Wash.) led off with a single up the middle, followed by a two-run home run by Hernandez to left-center field. The Redhawks threatened to score in the third inning thanks to back-to-back singles by Allegra Wilde (Kennewick, Wash.) and Antich to lead off the inning, but SeattleU could not take advantage of the scoring situation.

In the fifth inning, pinch hitter Maggie Wagner doubled to left field and scored on a SeattleU fielding error. Niki Williams drove in Taylor Smith on a single up the middle, and Ashley Tuiasosopo ended the game with a double to right field that scored Shawna Wright and Williams.

Ulrich suffered the loss for SeattleU, giving up 11 hits and 11 runs, eight of them earned, in 4 1/3 innings of work. For the second straight day, Baily Harris earned the victory over the Redhawks, allowing five hits, a walk, and two runs while striking out three batters in five innings of work.

Seattle University (1-13) returns home and welcomes Miami of Ohio to Logan Field for a midweek game Wednesday, March 10, at 3:30 p.m. SeattleU will then participate in the Husky Softball Classic next Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14, with one more game against Miami of Ohio, two more games with the Washington Huskies, as well as a Sunday matchup versus PCSC foe Portland State.
